After a bit of a slow start to the beginning of the season, my nieces high school basketball teams seems to have found themselves in a four game winning streak. They play again this Friday and I hope they can turn it into a five game winning streak. If by some chance they do happen to lose, you can blame it on @mrsbozz and I since we will be traveling down to Ohio to watch her play in person.
Trust me, I know the two things aren't related at all, but I am still going to feel horrible if that ends up being the case. Somewhere in the back of my mind there will always be that question of what if we hadn't been at the game, would they have won?
Sports is funny like that isn't it?
The college basketball world has been heating up with just a few short weeks before we find ourselves at the conference tournaments and then the national tournament. Although they have been on a bit of a slide lately, there is little doubt that my Michigan State Spartans should make it into the big dance in some capacity. What they are really playing for at this point is their seed number.
There was just one game in the top 25 last Thursday night and that was Ohio State taking down (18) Maryland 73 to 70 in Columbus.
Friday night there were two games in the top 25, but neither of them were upsets.
Saturday was a full day with seventeen games in the top 25. (9) Michigan State was able to shake off the previous losses to UCLA and USC with a big 86 to 74 win over Oregon in East Lansing. Meanwhile (24) Michigan had a 70 to 67 win over Indiana. This might not seem important now, but in a little bit you will understand why it is.
Kansas State took down (16) Kansas 81 to 73, and Creighton upset (11) Marquette 77 to 67. (6) Florida was the winner of the weekend with a big 90 to 81 win over the number one team in the country Auburn. Clemson also had a big upset beating (2) Duke 77 to 71. I want to say it feels weird to see Duke sitting close to the top again, but we all know that would be a lie. It was inevitable that they would find their way back up there.
I think was surprises me the most is the fact that Alabama is sitting in the number three spot. It's like we are in bizzaro world.
Finally on Saturday, (20) Arizona continued to prove their chops with an upset victory over (13) Texas Tech.
Sunday gave us two games in the top 25 as everyone was preparing for the Superbowl.
Neither of those games were upsets.
While everyone was recovering from their late night revelries, there were also two games in the top 25 on Monday. Once again, neither of those games was an upset.
Tuesday night we had twelve games in the top 25 as college basketball is about the only thing worth watching right now. Unless you like hockey of course. The NBA is just trash.
(20) Michigan had a huge win over (7) Purdue 75 to 73 and that along with the Indiana upset of (11) Michigan State by Indiana 71 to 67 propels Michigan into the top spot in the Big Ten with Purdue right below them and Michigan State in third place.
I'm starting to get nervous about that Michigan/Michigan State game...
(15) Kentucky had a huge upset over (5) Tennessee 75 to 64, and Kansas State smacked down the rising (13) Arizona 73 to 70. Finally UConn upset (24) Creighton 70 to 66. (2) Alabama had a huge win over Texas 103 to 80 and honestly they are looking like they could be the team to beat in the national championship tournament.
As much as it will pain me, I think I am going to need give them serious consideration in my bracket.
Finally, last night we had five games in the top 25. Villanova took down (9) St. John's in a very close game 73 to 71. I was watching the end of it and it was quite thrilling going right down to the wire. That was the only upset of the night last night. I should also point out that the Iowa/Rutgers game was pretty close and exciting too. I also had that game on and it was neck and neck for a while.
Michigan State is back in action this weekend against Illinois at Illinois and that is probably going to be a tough game. I hope they can move past this slide they have been on. It's typical MSU to be honest, but I hate it.
