THE National Champions

Just like that, college football is all over for the season. I think pretty much everyone had a feeling it was going to go this way, but last night, number 8 ranked Ohio State University covered the 8.5 point spread and beat number 7 Notre Dame 34 to 23 in the College Football National Championship.

You probably won't be shocked to find that I didn't stay up for the whole game. I actually had no intention of staying up for the whole game, but before halftime I got so sick of the insane number of commercials they were showing and I finally decided to go to bed.

Besides the Superbowl I honestly can't remember there ever being that many commercials during a game. It wasn't just the frequency of the commercials either, the breaks were nearly five minutes long. When I headed into bed there was about four minutes left in the game. I told @mrsbozz that OSU was about to go up 17 or 21 to 7 heading into halftime and it turned out my second guess was right.

To their credit, Notre Dame came out hot and fast to start the game, but it quickly became pretty evident that they weren't going to be able to keep up that pace. Their QB was gassed by the end of the nearly ten minute opening drive and he had already taken a beating. Those first seven points were the only ones The Fighting Irish would score in the opening half.

Meanwhile, OSU defense were able to shake off the shock and awe and get their feet under them after that first drive. It does appear Notre Dame did have some success in the second half scoring a couple touchdowns and some two point conversions, but by then the damage was already done.

Ohio state scored ten more points in the third quarter and a field goal in the fourth to more than cement the win.

I had read a post yesterday where OSU coach Day was complaining that in something like over 700 snaps, their opponents had never had offensive holding called against them. I did notice that the SEC officials last night called at least one offensive holding on Notre Dame, so maybe that will make him feel a bit better.

In the end, Ohio State won fair and square. That marks two years in a row where Big Ten teams have won the national championship. OSU fans are going to be insufferable (even more than usual) for the next year, so just get ready.

Looking back, I think the new twelve team playoff worked out really well. We got to see two really good teams face off that wouldn't have even been in the running if we were still following the four team format. There is always room for improvement, but I think this is a good thing.

It's out of control man. They incorporate commercials into the live game now as well putting the game into a tiny window in the bottom corner during player swaps. I'm at the point now where I want to not even watch the games and just watch the game after the fact and somehow avoid all media about the result. They are pushing us too far. The games already take 4 ours and 3 of that is commercials. I'm at the point now where I am going out of my way to not have anything to do with the companies that advertise during the games. It's not enjoyable like this.

Yeah that is a good point. I didn't even mention the ads they throw in the middle of the game now. I think this one was worse than the others because it was the championship game, but in a two hour span I basically watched the whole Ghostbusters movie because I was flipping back and forth during the commercials!

A friend of mine years ago had his directTV or wahtever the hell it is called to be "Watching" the game about 10 minutes before he would see it and it would skip all commercial breaks. As it turned out, and this wasn't that difficult to see coming, that 10 minute buffer wasn't anywhere near big enough because within half an hour we were caught back up. So while I can't apply that to every single game that means that 1/3 of the game is adverts and now they are subjecting us to them in commentary and even hijacking the game screen.

Something that could work is if there was a widespread movement to boycott any advertiser that appeared on screen during actual gameplay.

We have YouTube TV and when you flip to a game like that you can choose to start from the beginning, join live, or catch up via key plays. It's pretty cool. Lately I have been missing the beginning of the Michigan State basketball games so I get to start form the beginning and skip all the commercials.
