Opening Day

I was walking through the hallways of the school where I work today and I was a bit surprised to see many of the staff and students wearing Detroit Tigers gear. They have been celebrating the week before Spring Break with "spirit week", so it didn't surprise me that they picked one of those days to be a sports dress up day. What I didn't realize was there is a very specific reason why they picked today to be Tigers Day.

As you might have guessed from the title, it's because it is opening day of the MLB season today. Yes, I know, about a week ago we had the Tokyo series where the Chicago Cubs and the LA Dodgers faced off in Tokyo to a pretty much sold out crowd. That's what it looked like anyway. I was watching one of the games while I was walking on the treadmill the other morning.

Apparently it was a record breaking event this year, so that is kind of cool. It looked like a really fun atmosphere. It would be cool to get a chance to visit one of those games in person one day.

I couldn't find much information about the exhibition games that were played between the major league teams and the Japanese teams. I eventually did and it turns out the Cubs got beat by the Hanshin Tigers 3 to 0. The Dodgers on the other hand took down the Yomiuri Giants 5 to 1.

In the second round, the Hanshin Tigers also beat the Dodgers 3 to 0 and the Yomiuri Giants fell to the Cubs 4 to 2. Sounds like the Tigers are a pretty impressive team... I'm sure @dbooster knows all about them.

Then, the two MLB teams faced off against each other. The reigning World Series Champion Dodgers won both games against the Cubs 4 to 1 and 6 to 3 respectively.

Oddly enough, the Detroit Tigers start their season against the Dodgers in LA today. Hopefully they have the same luck that the Hanshin Tigers had against the Dodgers. As I have said before, our local minor league team is an affiliate for the Dodgers, so while I am a Tigers fan at heart, I do like the Dodgers (unless they are playing the Tigers).

Meanwhile, you might remember my nieces university team the Tiffin Dragons had a couple of big games against the defending conference tournament champion Northwood Timberwolves yesterday. They continued to breathe fire by beating Northwood 9 to 0 and 7 to 2 for the sweep.

If you read my other posts, you know that brings them to a total of 11 games on this winning streak and an impressively meager five runs allowed across those 11 games. That means they have outscored their opponents 69 to 5 across 11 games. Freaking nuts! In fact, those numbers are so impressive that it places them in first place in the G-MAC conference. Even crazier, they are currently ranked at 28th overall in the entire nation and that poll took place before their big wins yesterday.

Northwood is no joke, but Hillsdale is right around the corner on the 29th and the team has struggled against them in recent history. Hopefully this is the year they turn things around and continue their winning streak. I was talking to my niece the other day and she said the coach is really happy with what she as built after two years of struggling.
