You are probably saying to yourself, wait a minute, isn't the opening ceremony on Friday the 26th? That's more than a week away! While that might be true, I am taking into account the fact that Football and Rugby pool play actually starts on July 24th.
As much as I am not a fan of the Olympic committee and I think there is a lot of doping and other shenanigans happening that mostly gets a blind eye, I am still a little excited for the Olympic games. I'm not actually sure how much I will be watching on TV, but there is a good chance if I am doing some random channel surfing, I will probably find myself stopping on some event or the other.
Most specifically, I'm looking forward to the softball events since that hasn't always been a Summer Olympic sport. If you follow this blog you know that I am a bit of a softball fan, so this is a big deal. I think this is only the second time that softball has been included as an event.
On Thursday the 25th we get more football and rugby. We also add archery and handball to the mix. How in the world is handball still an event? Do people actually play that? Outside of gym class in grade school I don't think I have ever had occasion or desire to play handball.
Can you remember the last time you played handball? Have you ever played handball?
As I mentioned above, the opening ceremony is on Friday the 26th and then things really kick into high gear!
Pretty much everything you could imagine is happening on Saturday. Badminton from 8:30AM to 12:00. That's another one I have to question if people still play. Sure, pickle ball is all the rage now and I have little doubt we will eventually see it in the games, but badminton? They might as well put lawn darts in there for good measure.
The dangerous kind with metal spikes, not the wussy kind they sell these days.
I doubt I will be watching much artistic gymnastics, but beach volleyball has my attention. So does diving, that's always kind of fun to watch. I've always dug fencing a bit too even though I don't totally understand all of the terms or how the scoring works.
Water polo is another one of those sports that fascinates me. I can't imagine the stamina and endurance it takes to tread water for that long. All while trying to move a ball around the poll and having the opponents pulling you under and mucking about with you.
It's pretty brutal.
Sadly, I have a feeling not all of these events will be televised. Believe it or not over here in the US, air pistol shooting doesn't get a lot of airtime!
What event are you most looking forward to during these games? I'd love to talk about it in the comments!
