NCAA College Football Playoffs Round 1

I want to say it was a pretty interesting weekend in terms of the College Football Playoffs, but honestly, I think things went about the way everyone expected them to. At least as far as the end results are concerned. How we actually got there was a little more dicey.

I think what everyone can agree on is the fact that this was an unprecedented moment for college football. We had games being played in locations so late in the year that we have never seen before. I think most of the stars on the field were playing second fiddle to the temperature this past weekend. That's the one thing that most everyone seemed focused on (at least for the games up north).

If you saw my post on my main account (@bozz) this morning, you will know that we got a bit of snow on Friday in my neck of the woods. I guess thankfully just a little further south in South Bend Indiana, it wasn't quite as bad because things look pretty clean at Notre Dame.

I was really hoping Indiana would give them a bit more of a fight and to be fair, a 27 to 17 loss for the Hoosiers isn't a blow out by any means. I think a lot of people expected this outcome given the strength of schedule that Indiana had through the year. If they don't loose a lot of players hopefully they can schedule some bigger match ups next year and maybe prove everyone wrong.

As for this year, that's one Big 10 team down.

The other two Big 10 teams that played this weekend fared a bit better I am happy to say. (4) Penn State took down (10) SMU in a bit of a bloodbath 38 to 10. I actually didn't get to watch any of that game as I was spending some time with my parents and sister's family, but I was keeping an eye on the score. My brother in law was as well.

(16) Clemson actually had a pretty close game with (3) Texas though the Longhorns snagged the expected victory 38 to 24. I was watching this game and it actually wasn't until right towards the end that Texas started to open things up, so congrats to Clemson for keeping it closer than probably a lot of people expected they would.

Finally, we had the late night (6) Ohio State versus (7) Tennessee game. Tennessee has been good this year, but I think everyone wasn't shocked when OSU came out to a pretty commanding lead in the beginning of the game. To their credit and despite the close to zero temperatures (F), Tennessee started to show some life, only to be pretty much shut down in the second half and Ohio State came away with the 42 to 17 win.

So what does the playoff picture look like now?

(4) Penn State heads to (9) Boise State on New Years Eve, (3) Texas takes on (12) Arizona State on New years day followed by (6)Ohio State facing (1) Oregon in a rematch that they have been begging for since that rough game this fall. Finally, (5) Notre Dame takes on the (2) Georgia Bulldogs also on New Years Day.

I do have to give some props to Ohio and Jacksonville State for making the Cure Bowl pretty exciting on Friday afternoon. The 30 to 27 win by Ohio was much more exciting than the 33 to 8 beat down Florida gave Tulane in the Gasparilla bowl. What is "gasparilla" anyway?

We have two bowl games today and then one tomorrow before we take as short break until after Christmas.

In retail they called the time between Christmas and New Years the 13th month. That seems to be the case for the college football bowl games as well!

How much do you think Georgia's stock dropped when Carson Beck was declared out for the season? I feel bad for that guy because he dropped out of the NFL draft to play another season and now he has to do it after surgery. Crazy these kids getting beat up so much before they even finish college.

It's just ridiculous. I can totally understand why a lot of players choose not to participate in the bowl games anymore. It's too bad though because I really enjoy watching the bowl games. They were always a bit of a fun bonus at the end of the season.

The Clemson spread was 13½...
