It was a beautiful weekend when @mrsbozz and I traveled down to Columbus, OH to watch our niece play softball with her Fall travel Team the Ohio Lasers Scarlet. It was a showcase tournament, so I think there was a little less pressure with no trophies or awards on the line.
I was able to sit right along the fence with my brother in law who is the official scorekeeper for the team. He puts all of the stats into the Game Changer app and determines if hits are actually hits or errors and stuff like that. It's actually pretty interesting the thought that goes into which way to judge a ball. You might be surprised, but some parents get very upset if you credit their daughter with an error that you they think should have just been a hit for the other team.
Absolutely irate!
Thanks to my proximity right along the fence, I was able to get some really awesome shots of my niece batting that I have been sharing with you all week. After much trial and error, I have learned that you need to actually hit the shutter button on your camera when the ball is leaving the pitchers hand. If you wait until you think the girl is going to hit the ball, you will miss the ball.
By taking the photo when the ball is leaving the pitchers hand, you can usually get a good shot as the batter is hitting the ball or right after they hit it. If that gives you an idea of just how fast these young ladies are throwing the ball.
Either that or just how much shutter lag there is with smartphones...
As you can see in the photo above, my niece had just hit the ball and it is flying in the air right around the level of the stadium light. It was a relatively good weekend for them. They started off the day at 8:30 on Saturday with an 11 to 0 win over a Cincy Doom team.
Then they had a tough 8 to 3 loss against an Ohio Outlaws team. They looked a little disjointed in that game and I think the early morning finally caught up with them.
Finally, around noon they had another game against a team from Pennsylvania and they won that game 10 to 1. It was a really good game and even in the game they lost, my niece played really well.
On Sunday they had two more games. @mrsbozz and I had things to do at home, so we left after the last game on Saturday. Sunday was a split day for them, they took an early loss 7 to 1 against a decent Ohio Cobras team at 8:30.
I've actually never seen them play this team before. I had never even heard of the Cobras organization, but it looks like they are quite decent. Either that or it was just a bad morning for the ladies.
They followed up with a nice 9 - 2 win over a Firecrackers team later that morning so in all, I think it was a good weekend for them. They have five more games this weekend in what will be their last tournament of the year in Columbus. Then they head down to Tennessee to play in a tournament down there.
I think the ladies are excited to get on the road and maybe play in a little bit warmer weather. It was quite frigid on the diamonds at 8:30 in the morning!
As usual, we will be streaming the action from the comfort and warmth of our home.
