I was sitting at home the other night watching the news after some major sporting even had just finished up and they had a news story about a company called Cosm. I had never heard of it before, but the concept piqued my interest.
Apparently they build these large spaces and make them look and feel like stadiums on the inside. As of right now, there are only two locations, one in LA and another in Texas, but I can see this sort of thing blowing up across the country. They already have plans to build more locations in various major cities.
Basically, they use large projections screens to immerse you in whatever sporting event or concert they are showing at the time. You buy tickets just like you would for a regular sporting even or show and then you head to Cosm to immerse yourself in the event.
The only difference is, you aren't actually there. The food is perhaps a bit better, and the seats a likely a bit more comfortable. It looks pretty awesome from what I can see. I'd love to visit one some day.
I can't say if the idea of Cosm predates the Sphere in Vegas, but the ideas look really similar to me. Cosm uses special cameras that pick up just about every angle of a sporting event or concert. It actually gives you views that you wouldn't necessarily get if you were actually at the event.
One of the companies that provides the cameras that Cosm uses is located in Jackson, MI just a couple hours away from where I live. In fact, due to the connection between Cosm and this camera company, I think they are going to be putting a location in Detroit in the near future.
The company that provides the cameras is actually called C360 and it is only recently that Cosm purchased them. You know the pylons in the end zone of a football game with a camera in them? Those are produced by C360. Those special C360 cameras along with broadcast feeds are how Cosm puts you right in the middle of the action.
Each Cosm facility is split into three distinct areas. There is The Dome, The Hall, and the Deck. The Dome is where you get fully immersed in the action. The Hall is a space like your average sports bar on steroids with walls of live sports feeds happening all around you. Finally, The Deck is like an outside bar area where you can still keep track of the scores, but mingle with your friends and maybe take in a sunset as well.
I think this whole idea is pretty cool and I hope that it can pick up some traction and spread to areas. I have a feeling it's going to be nearly impossible to get into some of the spaces when they first open up. Getting a catered experience like this usually comes at a premium.
