THERE ARE TOO MANY NAMES. It really is polluting the story. Unless the character has an impactful presence on the story, will return at least twice, dont tell me their name. I dont need to know all the names of all the kids in that school, or all the senators, the names of the parents of the kids. I dont even know what Emissa looks like because she gets introduced early on in the story, its unclear she is going to be an important character, you forget about her and then WHAM girlfriend. Which is suspicious as F. Wdym she voluntarily comes clean out the stables? Clearly to get to Vis.
damn his dad wanting to throw him in the labyrinth after hearing the story of the glass shard ghosts. As a reader you might have struggled, just like vis, where your loyalty and support should be. The loving brother/dad, the rebellion, vis and just wanting to finish highschool. But this makes it clear that dad is awful, probably leading up to Vis clinging on to the rebellion more and more

In general there was just too much going on in this book at once, vis reconnecting with his mysterious past, the rebellion, the weapon, the labyriinth, other school mysteries, vis having to pass on to classes. ALL THOSE PEOPLE. I think the writer shouldve spaced event more evenly, and not all the different stories together like this. Like the progression in school is so silly compared to the whole civil war storyline. The gravitas is just not comparable

I don’t know yet why others don’t like this book so much. Its messy sure, but there is also a lot going on. Its not particularly boring. The worldbuilding is a bit wonky, but not unbelievable, and Vis is the biggest Mary Sue but personally I don’t mind that much. The romance is annoying me but thats just because its so soulless and we could’ve done without it (unless its going to get significance in the next chapters). Perhaps I am most annoyed right now with Vis getting his best friends involved in the deathmatch he knows people, you know, die in.
