Working from home, the only challenge is not being able to do it

One of the biggest reasons I left IT was because I had to go to an office every day. One day I sat at my desk for an entire 8 hour day waiting for work that I could do to come in. Nothing happened all day while the others were out. No one even came into the shop.

It was during this uneventful day that I questioned why was it that I was coming into an office day in and day out? TeamViewer allows me to control machines remotely. I have the ability to get enough information out of people to visualise what is going on and help them or find the information to fix their problem. For everything else I am either on site or in the workshop.

Working from home just makes more sense. True, it has the potential to be abused and that will happen. But for the most part people don't need to spend 8 hours a day working in an office. Why not be at home.

And this is my problem. I've never worked from home. So I have no real idea whether or not it is workable. You see, once I left IT I became a postal worker riding a motorcycle delivering mail all day. So I went from being stuck behind a desk all day to being stuck behind handlebars for the best part of the day.

For me I spend 2 - 3 hours in an office doing Team Leader stuff or sorting mail, then I spend an equivalent time riding a motorcycle. With a headset in my helmet I can make and receive phone calls. For all intents and purposes my office becomes my motorcycle and I love it, even if it's not much of a motorcycle.

Some jobs will work well remotely. IT is definitely one that works well. Managers can work well remotely. Hell, here in New Zealand we showed you can even run an entire country from home. You can even do surgery from home now.

But then there are jobs that can't be done remotely. Tradies are pretty much a given here. You can't build a house from your own house.

But think about how much money companies can save if their workforce is working from home. No more office rentals means all that money can go into the employees (not that that is ever going to happen). The money saved on those offices also includes money saved on electricity etc.

I don't truly see any real issues with working from home, unless you're like me and have zero motivation.
