AI and Creative Writing + IA y Escritura Creativa [Eng+Spa]

Today I was going through some things that several friends sent me, from different networks. And the common theme of these emails and messages was the use or testing of content creation tools that used artificial intelligence. In various places, the use of #AI to create content is frowned upon, even so, the potential of these tools, and their versatility, is undeniable.

It should be noted that, although AI agents can give very interesting and useful results, in general they need a learning base or a series of models to learn to create content that is coherent. The latest advances I have seen in the news are really impressive.

One of the friends shared with me a story that he had generated with the help of an AI for the creation of short novels and stories, ‘Story Generator’. It was a work of science fiction that spoke of a future in which intelligent life on a planet had disappeared, the planet was in decline, and its mother star was so old that it could explode in a relatively short time. In this environment, an alien corporation arrived to extract material from the planet and convert it into high-level energy material. Something very profitable, but illegal to do without the supervision of the Alliance.

The point of the story is that, although life on the planet had disappeared, something like if humans ceased to exist on Earth, the last inhabitants left a legacy to try to create an intelligence to inherit them. The aliens sent androids that resembled the body of the native intelligent organisms (already extinct), so that it would be easy to explore facilities and things that had been left behind. But, they found more than what they were looking for, there was an intelligent artificial entity that took over one of the androids and communicated with them.

It called itself ‘The Last Library’, and the aliens had a clue of its existence because they had found a sea of tombstones, and one of them had a couple of sentences written on it as an epitaph: “I refuse to enter the darkness in silence, let the end find me in noisy struggle, even if it is an inevitable end. Last tombstone.” And that made them think that if it was the last life of that race, who put the tombstone? It could be that the last creature put it there and wrote it before dying, but there was no body nearby and nothing seemed to say that it was done in advance.

The answer was simple, there was another ‘living’ existence, but it was not human. The Library was an artificial entity created as an attempt for something or someone to tell about the civilization that was there. In the original project, several library entities were created, almost everything was sent in capsules into space, but they had no knowledge of any alien civilization, so it was like sending a bottle with a message thrown into the sea.

Only one library remained on Earth, and after hundreds of years, all contact with the probes sent was lost. The Library that took control of the android asked the aliens to get it off the planet, before the sun exploded, and to allow it to carry the message and memory of its creators. However, the directors of the corporation were not interested, rather they wanted to make this thing disappear so they could continue extracting material, convert it into high-energy material, and leave the planet before it was discovered that they had done something illegal.

So, a hunt was unleashed against the Library, embodied in the android. Despite the aliens' technology more advanced, they were amazed that the library managed to learn everything it could from them, and began to create problems for them in the extraction of material. To the point that some directors claimed that it was better to collaborate, to take that thing off the planet and then put it in some exhibition or something similar, it may even have served to generate money as study material for some historians or archaeologists of different races.

Unfortunately, arrogance and pride are not an exclusively human defect, the main members of the board of directors refused to negotiate or give in, they even preferred to cover the losses of the fight with their own resources. They refused to see that inferior thing as an entity worthy of negotiating with them. After a series of disastrous battles, they finally managed to bombard the Library with an army of androids and destroyed it, but they saw through the 'eyes' of the combat androids that were operating it that pages of books were flying out of the explosion… they were terrified to understand that this was also the 'Library'.

In the epilogue of the story, on a stolen spaceship, all the androids are working, now all of them have a version of the library's core software. But, to ensure some variation, the main Library loaded into each android the personal diary of some important person that was in its database, it is as if it were a continuation of the person who recorded that life diary. On the command bridge, the Last Library (embodied in another android) watched the floating screens of information, looking for more knowledge and data that would allow them to choose a route or location so they could start living on their own. While they escaped with the stolen ship, they continued in a computational battle against the ship's central brain, which still wanted to resist these thieves.

I found the story very entertaining, and for having been generated with the help of an AI I thought it had potential. It could serve as the beginning of a saga of stories, as a script for a movie, or as a Pilot idea to create a television series. I think what attracted me the most was thinking about how he used an Artificial Intelligence to tell a story where the protagonist, and Hero, is an AI that tries to preserve the memory of humanity.

So I decided to comment on this idea, maybe I should try to test this writing assistant myself, for some of my crazy ideas for writing stories. That may be a project for the future.

Hoy estaba revisando algunas cosas que me enviaron varios amigos, de distintas redes. Y el tema en común de estos correos y mensajes era el uso o puesta a prueba de herramientas de creación de contenido que usaban inteligencia artificial. En varios sitios, el uso de #IA para crear contenidos es muy mal visto, aun así, las potencialidades de estas herramientas, y su versatilidad, son algo innegable.

Hay que señalar que, si bien los agentes de IA pueden dar resultados muy interesantes y útiles, en general necesitan una base de aprendizaje o una serie de modelos para aprender a crear contenidos que tengan coherencia. Los últimos avances que he visto en las noticias son realmente impresionantes.

Uno de los amigos me compartió una historia que había generado con la ayuda de una IA para creación de novelas cortas y cuentos, ‘Story Generator’. Era una obra de ciencia ficción que hablaba de un futuro en que la vida inteligente de un planeta había desaparecido, el planeta estaba en decadencia, y su estrella madre estaba tan vieja que podría explotar en relativamente poco tiempo. En este ambiente, una corporación alienígena llego para extraer material del planeta y convertirlo en materia energética de alto nivel. Algo muy rentable, pero ilegal de hacerlo sin la supervisión de la Alianza.

El punto de la historia es que, si bien la vida del planeta había desaparecido, algo así como si los humanos dejaran de existir en la tierra, los últimos habitantes dejaron un legado para tratar de crear una inteligencia que les heredara. Los alienígenas enviaron androides que asemejaban el cuerpo de los organismos inteligentes nativos (ya extintos), para que fuera sencilla la exploración de instalaciones y cosas que habían quedado atrás. Pero, encontraron más de lo que buscaban, había una entidad artificial inteligente que se apoderó de uno de los androides y se comunicó con ellos.

Se llamó a sí misma como ‘La Última Biblioteca’, ya los alienígenas tenían una pista de su existencia porque habían hallado un mar de lápidas, y una de ellas tenía escrita como epitafio un par de frases: “Me niego a entrar en la oscuridad en silencio, que el fin me encuentre en ruidosa lucha, incluso si es un fin inevitable. Última lápida”. Y eso les puso a pensar que si era la última vida de esa raza, ¿quién puso la lápida? Podría ser que la última criatura lo pusiera y escribiera antes de morir, pero no había cuerpo cerca y nada parecía decir que fuera hecho con antelación.

La respuesta fue simple, había otra existencia ‘viva’, pero no era humana. La Biblioteca era una entidad artificial creada como intento de que algo o alguien contara sobre la civilización que hubo allí. En el proyecto original se crearon varias entidades de biblioteca, se envió casi todo en cápsulas al espacio, pero no tenían conocimiento de ninguna civilización alienígena, así que fue como mandar una botella con un mensaje arrojado al mar.

Solamente quedó una biblioteca en la tierra, y luego de cientos de años, se perdió todo contacto con las sondas enviadas. La Biblioteca que tomó control del androide les pidió a los alienígenas que le sacaran del planeta, antes de que el sol explotara, y que le permitieran llevar el mensaje y memoria de sus creadores. Sin embargo, los directivos de la corporación no estaban interesados, más bien querían desaparecer a esta cosa para poder seguir extrayendo material, convertirlo en material de alta energía, y salir del planeta antes de que se descubriera que habían hecho algo ilegal.

Así que se desató una cacería contra la Biblioteca encarnada en el androide. A pesar de la tecnología de los alienígenas, se asombraron de que la biblioteca logró aprender de ellos todo lo que se podía, y comenzó a crearles problemas en la extracción de material, al punto de que una parte de los directivos alegó que era mejor colaborar, sacar esa cosa del planeta y luego ponerla en alguna exhibición o algo parecido, incluso puede que sirviera para generar dinero como material de estudio para algunos historiadores o arqueólogos de razas distintas.

Por desgracia, la arrogancia y la soberbia no es un defecto exclusivamente humano, los principales de la mesa directiva se negaron a negociar o ceder, prefirieron incluso cubrir las pérdidas de la pelea con sus propios recursos. Se negaban a ver a esa cosa inferior como una entidad digna de negociar con ellos. Luego de una serie de batallas desastrosas, finalmente lograron bombardear con un ejército de androides a la Biblioteca y la destruyeron, pero vieron por los ‘ojos’ de los androides de combate que estaba operando que de la explosión salían volando hojas de libros… se aterraron al entender que eso era también la ‘Biblioteca’.

En el epílogo de la historia, en una nave espacial que robaron, todos los androides están trabajando, ahora todos ellos tienen una versión del software central de la biblioteca. Pero, para asegurar algo de variación, la Biblioteca principal cargó en cada androide el diario personal de alguna persona importante que estaba en su base de datos, es como si fuera una continuación de la persona que registró ese diario de vida. En el puente de mando, la Última Biblioteca (encarnada en otro androide) observaba las pantallas flotantes de información, buscando más conocimientos y datos que les permitieran elegir una ruta o ubicación para poder comenzar a vivir por su cuenta. Mientras escapaban con la nave robada, y continuaban en una batalla computacional contra el cerebro central de la nave, que aún quería oponer resistencia a estos ladrones.

Yo encontré la historia muy entretenida, y para haber sido generada con la ayuda de una IA me pareció que tenía potencial. Podría servir como inicio de una saga de historias, como guion para una película o como idea de Piloto para crear una serie de televisión. Creo que lo que me atrajo más fue pensar en cómo usó una Inteligencia Artificial para contar una historia en la que la protagonista, y Héroe, es una IA que trata de preservar la memoria de la humanidad.

Así que decidí comentar sobre esta idea, quizás debería tratar de probar este asistente de escritura yo mismo, para algunas de mis ideas locas para escribir cuentos. Eso puede ser un proyecto para el futuro.
