Today I'm going to talk to you about an anime that I found very captivating, especially because of a story that makes you think that what you like isn't always necessarily something you'll live for your whole life, or that your path is uncertain and applicable in other ways. And yes, I'm talking about a boy who likes math and applies it to cooking; a refreshing story, full of stumbles, self-discovery, and, above all, the combination of math with haute cuisine.
Fermat no Ryōri (フェルマーの料理)…
This anime premiered in early July and concluded in September, with a total of 12 episodes. It was directed by Kazuya Ichikawa and produced by the animation studio Domerica. It's a shonen anime full of kitchen adventures, and it also has a J-drama adaptation, in case you're interested in that as well.
Regarding the plot…
The story revolves around Gaku Kitada, a brilliant high school student whose future as a mathematician takes a turn for the worse. During a competition exam, he leaves the paper blank due to the pressure he felt at the time. After several run-ins with the school administration and losing his scholarship, he encounters Kai Asakura, the chef of an exclusive restaurant. Kai is impressed by Gaku's precise cooking skills, as he applies equations to every dish, which later leads to him hiring him.

The series explores the premise that haute cuisine is, in essence, a precision science, where Gaku will learn to apply mathematics, the variables of formulas in the ingredients and preparation of haute cuisine, and, in turn, to face the competitiveness of this culinary environment. Will he be able to succeed and demonstrate the close link between mathematics and elite gastronomy?
Personal opinion
The story captivated me from the start, because the idea of merging mathematics with cooking wasn't something I thought was possible—not the character himself, but the concept of applying mathematical thinking to elite cuisine. Furthermore, Gaku doesn't strike me as your typical protagonist; he has his doubts, fears, and an anxiety stemming from his need for approval from others, from having to meet their demands at the expense of his own health. This makes him more human and draws you closer to his story. There's a part I really liked—well, two, but the second would be a major spoiler—where Gaku says that after taking the exam, he realized he likes math, but it's not something that inspires him to do and explore it on a large scale, unlike his classmates who were completely immersed in solving and discovering new equations. This reminded me of a woman on Facebook who commented that she loves biology, but wondered, "Is this something I would work with every day?" That's when she understood that working at something you love is not the same as working at what you were good at, which in that case was pastry making, and she felt that with that, she could do it every day.
Gaku found in the kitchen the freedom that pure mathematics couldn't offer him. He could apply what he loved to something that satisfied him and allowed him creative control without straying from the logic he already knew. In other words, mathematics wasn't his viable vocation, while cooking gave him tangible results. Ingredients, temperatures, cooking times, and stir-frying methods became variables in an equation he had to balance and solve to achieve perfect flavor. I must admit that Kai's character sometimes frustrated me, but you eventually understand the reasons behind his behavior, especially in the world of haute cuisine.
What I didn't like was the tension that was generated at certain points in the plot, too much unnecessary melodrama, and the confusing ending. There's nothing like a satisfying conclusion, although I think there will be a second season, I can't guarantee it.

Hoy vengo hablarles de un anime que me resulto muy cautivador, sobre todo por una historia que te hace pensar que, no muchas veces lo que te gusta es necesariamente algo por el que vivirás toda tu vida, o que lo caminas son incierto y aplicables de desde otra manera y si, estoy hablando de un chico que le gusta las matemáticas y la aplica a la cocina; una historia refrescante, llena de tropiezos, encuentros hacia uno mismo y, sobre todo, la combinación de las matemáticas con la alta cocina.

Este anime fue estrenado en los primeros de julio, finalizando en septiembre, con un total de 12 episodios, dirigido por Kazuya Ichikawa y producido por el estudio de animación Domerica. Opinión personal
La historia me cautivo de uno, pues eso de fusionar las matemáticas con la cocina no es algo que pensaba que era posible, no al personaje en sí, pero si el concepto de aplicar el pensamiento matemático a la cocina de élite; aunado que Gaku no se me hace al típico protagonista convencional, tiene sus dudas, temores, una ansiedad que se debe a que el esta esperando la aprobación de los demás, de cumplir con las exigencias del otro, a costa de su propia salud, cosa que lo vuelve más humano y te acercas más a su historia en sí. Hay una parte que me gusto mucho, bueno dos, pero ya la segunda seria mucho spoiler y es que Gaku dice que, cuando presento el examen entendió que le gusta la matemática, más no es algo que le evoque hacer y explorar a gran escala, no como sus otros compañeros que se metían a lleno por resolver y encontrar nuevas ecuaciones y eso me hizo pensar en una señora en Facebook que comento que a ella le gustaba la biología, le encanta, no obstante se preguntó ¿pero es algo con lo que trabajaría día a día? Ahí entendió que no es lo mismo trabajar por algo que te gusta a lo que era buena, que en ese caso era la pastelería y sentía que, con eso, podía hacerlo todos los días.
Gaku encontró en la cocina la libertad que las matemáticas puras no le daban, podía aplicar lo que le gustaba en algo que le satisfacía y le permitía un control creativo sin alejarse de la lógica que él ya venia manejando, es decir, las matemáticas no era su vocación viable, mientras que la cocina le daba esos resultados tangibles, los ingredientes, las temperaturas, los tiempos de cocción y los métodos de salteado se convirtieron en variables en una ecuación que él debía equilibrar y resolver para alcanzar la perfección del sabor. Debo admitir que, el personaje de Kai me desesperaba en ocasiones, aun así, uno va comprendiendo el porque de su comportamiento, más en el mundo de la alta cocina.
Lo que no me gusto fue la tensión que se generaba en ciertos momentos de la trama, demasiado melodrama innecesario y el final confuso, no hay como una conclusión satisfactoria, aunque creo que tendrá segunda temporada, no les podría asegurar.
Puntos positivos…
-Premisa única.
-Platos exquisiticos, de verdad me provocaron muchos de ellos.
-Una historia con mensajes profundos, más de lo que aparenta.

-Mucho melodrama.
-Final confuso.
