Today I come to show you something that I keep with great affection for all that it represents, it is my collection of old Venezuelan coins. This collection I have been enriching it in part to some pieces that I have obtained on my own, others were obtained by my brother in law who also likes to collect things, so when he gets a coin that he already has he gives it to me, and some were a gift from my father in law (father of my brother in law).
Hoy vengo a mostrarles algo que guardo con mucho cariño por todo lo que representa, se trata de mi colección de monedas antiguas venezolanas. Esta colección la he ido enriqueciendo en parte a algunas piezas que he conseguido por mi cuenta, otras las consiguió mi cuñado al que también le gusta coleccionar cosas, así que cuando consigue alguna moneda que él ya tiene me la regala a mi, y algunas fueron un regalo de mi suegro (padre de mi cuñado)
The photo did not focus accurately but this is where I keep my coins for now. I know it's not the best place to keep them but it's while I get a more suitable place.
La foto no enfocó con precisión pero es aquí donde guardo mis monedas por ahora. Sé que no es el mejor lugar para guardarlas pero es mientras consigo un sitio más adecuado.
Esta es una Moneda Ficha Conmemorativa Shell Charles Lindbergh de 1927 acuñada en plata, era usada única y exclusivamente para pagar la gasolina en las estaciones de servicio en la época del presidente Juan Vicente Gómez, por allá, a inicios del siglo XX. En la moneda todavía se puede apreciar (aunque está muy desgastada) la imagen al relieve del Spirit of St. Louis un monoplano que usó el aviador estadounidense Charles Lindbergh para hacer la primera travesía aérea del Océano Atlántico de Nueva York a París en solitario y sin escalas en mayo de 1927.
This is an imitation of a "Morocota", that was the old name for the United States coin known as the double eagle, which was in circulation between 1849 and 1933, which was equivalent to $20, although it was also worth its weight in gold. This one particularly comes from a theme park about the life of yesteryear in Venezuela.
Esta es una imitación de una "Morocota", así era como le llamaban antiguamente a la moneda de los Estados Unidos conocida como doble águila y que estuvo en circulación entre los años 1849 y 1933, las cuales equivalían a 20 $ aunque también valían por su peso en oro. Esta particularmente proviene de un parque temático sobre la vida de antaño en Venezuela.
Here we see the difference between a 12 and a half cent coin from about 50 years ago and a much older one, more than a hundred years old. I got the older one in an antique store and I remember that it cost me relatively cheap, for what it costs nowadays.
Aquí vemos la diferencia entre una moneda de 12 céntimos y medio de hace más o menos 50 años con otra mucho más antigua, más de cien años. La más antigua la conseguí en una tienda de antigüedades y recuerdo que me costó relativamente barata, para lo que cuesta hoy en día.
This coin is known here in Venezuela as “yellow cent”, although it was also known as “puya amarilla”. although it was also known as “puya amarilla”. It was in circulation in 1944 and had a value of 5 centavos.
Esta moneda es conocida aquí en Venezuela como "Centavo amarillo" , aunque también la conocían como "puya amarilla". Estuvo en circulación en 1944 y tenía un valor de 5 centavos.
This is very important as well as ancient because it is not a public or mass circulation coin, but first I will give you a little context so that you understand what I mean. In Venezuela, in the past, the haciendas used to manage a system of internal trade, they paid their workers with tokens with the initials of the hacienda and then they exchanged them in grocery stores of the hacienda itself, thus maintaining a monopoly.
Esta es muy importante además de antigua porque no se trata de una moneda de circulación publica o masiva, pero antes les daré un poco de contexto para que entiendan a que me refiero. En Venezuela, antiguamente las haciendas manejaban un sistema de comercio interno, les pagaban a sus trabajadores con fichas con las iniciales de la hacienda y luego ellos las canjeaban en tiendas de abarrotes de la propia hacienda, con lo cual mantenían un monopolio.
This coin was obtained by my brother-in-law in the town of Montalbán (where I am from) it belonged to the Hacienda of Ramón María Hidalgo, whose initials can be seen on the coin together with the letter M of Montalbán (the town) this hacienda no longer exists. As I explained in the previous paragraph, the coin was for exclusive use within the hacienda.
Esta moneda la consiguió mi cuñado en el pueblo Montalbán (de donde yo soy oriundo) pertenecía a la Hacienda de Ramón María Hidalgo, cuyas iniciales se pueden ver en la moneda junto con la letra M de Montalbán (el pueblo) esta hacienda hoy en día ya no existe. Como ya expliqué en el párrafo anterior la moneda era de uso exclusivo dentro de la hacienda.
