Update 6 on my shed

in DIYHub9 days ago

It's a year since Update 5. In our house we have a saying: 'To accomplish anything you need three things: Time, energy, and money.' Living where we do, for outdoor activities, you can add 'suitable weather' to that list.

While building this shed has been an exercise in buying as little as possible there have been things it was necessary to purchase, and purchase new. Proper materials for the roof are definitely in this; I need to be sure it will be waterproof.

I had hoped to achieve this with felt and bitumen sealant, but it wasn't enough. So I bit the bullet and purchased some metal roof panels. With the felt, panels, fixings, and sealant for the joints I reckon I'm up to about £350-400 in costs so far. Well short of the £5-7,000 range expected to buy a ready made shed. Sure, buying one would have it built quicker, but in the 25 months this project has been underway, I couldn't have saved the money required to purchase a ready made one.

Anyway, while I've had time, there has been health, money, and weather all causing issues. Indeed, in March the rest of the family were up in Scotland for the week and I'd intended to work on the shed then. It rained for the whole week. In fact, it was that week which convinced me felt and sealant alone weren't going to be sufficient.

I did try to source roof panels that were recycled, but they were either to large for my vehicle, too expensive for what was being offered, or went before I could arrange to collect them - the most frustrating of those was when I arranged to go early one Sunday am to a place about an hour's drive away. The person didn't think to message me that, despite our arrangement, he sold them the day before. Thankfully I'd checked for the address before I left the house but still, it was a day I could have had an extra hour or two in bed.

Anyway, here's the pics from today:

Picture Two: Steady progress - which, frustratingly, included three trips to the local hardware store for extra fixings.

Picture Three: Done for the day.

The edges need to be folded over and secured, and the remaining panels will go along the back wall at the top whch will add extra weather protection. This should be done on Friday.

Then, I'll be on to puting the slate I have across the front and door sides, seal the undeside of the overhangs, and start inside.

At this rate it'll be finished just in time for us to move...

The first thing I thought of was a podcast shed. But of course you already knew that's what I would think. ;-)

You shed pace yourself.

The shed update shows solid progress. The structure’s shaping up well. Nice work.
