Hooded Merganser Family

Here is a first sighting for me. I finally saw a hooded merganser family.

I had to wade into some muddy reeds to get a decent shot of them.

It was worth getting a bit muddy to see the babies practicing how to take off flying on water.

Not enough feathers buddy, but soon you will be able to take off from any body of water easily.

Mom was off diving somewhere and the babies collected together on a log.

Now they spotted mom and rushed over her to her branch.

They sure can leap out of the water easily.

Now they are safe and sound, the mom was keeping an eye out on me though.

I'm sure I looked too clumsy trying to step on reeds instead of mud for her to worry too much.

Now its general grooming time.

Now its off to explore the swamp some more. They really blend in well here as the babies even has water bubble white spots on their backs and they kind of look like just another log poking up out of the water when huddled together. I was hoping to see the father but maybe they don't stick around after the babies are born. Or he was off fishing somewhere in deeper waters.

Sort:

Wonderful! 12 little ones with a proud mother! New chirping in the bushes, hurry up with nest building!

I wonder where their nest was? Its a very secretive swamp they were located at. I ended up getting a few ticks on me from bushwacking to that area.

Nice shots 👍 worth the effort. We have common mergansers here on the lake. I did see hooded mergansers when we lived in California.

You have loons on the lake too right? I'm still hoping to get a good shot of one someday. Maybe camping in Michigan this year will help my odds.

Yes there are loons on Lake Dunmore. Sometimes two pair. And usually a pair at Silver Lake which is close by. Upper Peninsula is probably a good bet. Much easier to hear them than to photograph them

I remember seeing signs warning boaters about not running over loons. I remember hearing them while camping next to Elk Lake but never saw one.

I love photos like this where ducks and ducklings are. It's so cute. And those sticking out feathers are a kind of highlight for ducks of this species.

Yeah there are red breasted mergansers here too with even more spiked feathers. I just wonder what swamp they decide to nest at. I only see them on the river in the middle of downtown Chicago fighting over fish.

thanks :-)
