After the madrasa was over, on the way home in the soft light of the setting sun, a beautiful moment between me and my son is shared in the following small story:
As soon as they exited the madrasa gate, Rafsan ran up and took his mother’s hand. He was in a cheerful mood today, talking about his studies and stories of playing with friends all day long. While walking on the dusty path alongside the road, Rafsan suddenly noticed their elongated shadows on the ground.
The sun was leaning slightly in the western sky, making their shadows appear quite long and clear. Rafsan suddenly stopped and looked at his mother with a mischievous smile, saying, “Mom, look how big our shadows have become! Let’s take a fun picture.”
His mother smiled and patted his head. Rafsan formed a ‘V’ sign with his small fingers and posed it against the shadow. Seeing her son's joy, his mother joined in with her own shadow. A uniquely beautiful geometric pattern emerged on the paved road—one shadow was of the mother and the other of her beloved child.
The joy of that moment seemed to be captured in a still image. The mother thought, “Life is just like this shadow. As the sunlight increases, life will become tougher; but I will always be by my son’s side like this shadow.” That few seconds of shadow photography on the road was not just a hobby, but a living reflection of the pure love between mother and son. Rafsan, still laughing, tightened his grip on his mother’s hand again. Their two shadows seemed to merge together as they continued on the path home.
