A new adventure has brought me to San Luis Beach. I took the opportunity to explore the area and found myself gazing at the stream located right next to the Civil Protection headquarters—what used to be the Jamaica nightclub. The color of the water is striking: a deep emerald green very similar to that found in lagoons.
I stood watching as the water gushes out of the channel and then follows its course to meet the beach; at that moment, the waves break and the flow becomes one. There is quite striking vegetation all around here, so the greenery extends throughout the entire area.
This spot has become a landmark along Universidad Avenue. It’s surprising to see how the sand on this stretch of beach has given way to the stream flowing through the channel, to the point of forming what could be considered a natural pool. Of course, it’s not suitable for the public due to the high level of pollution.
A special guest posed for the camera: a beautiful white heron fishing at the mouth of the canal. As I watched it, I moved very stealthily so as not to scare it away and thus capture it on film for posterity. This particular stretch was located under a bridge that had been vandalized so its metal could be sold; for that reason, to cross the canal, you have to veer off the boulevard, take the sidewalk along the avenue, and then return via the Civil Protection side.
It’s surprising to see so many beachgoers enjoying San Luis Beach near the estuary, but it turns out that this area has been developed to accommodate visitors. Kiosks and other businesses have set up shop there to sell food and drinks—including alcoholic beverages—as well as to provide chairs and liven up visitors’ stay with music.
San Luis Beach is usually very popular in other areas away from the estuary, such as near the Bordones Hotel and the Venetur Hotel, the Military Casino, the College of Physicians, and across from the University of Oriente. From all these spots, you can watch a beautiful Cumaná sunset—a picture-perfect scene where the reddish hues of the sun’s descent over the Gulf of Cariaco into the Caribbean Sea are clearly visible.

Este tramo en particular quedaba debajo de un puente que fue vandalizado para comercializar sus metales, por tal razón para cruzar el caño hay que desviarse del boulevard, tomar la acera de la avenida y luego retornar por el lado de Protección Civil.
Sorprende observar a tantos bañistas disfrutar de playa San Luis cerca del caño, pero resulta que en esta área se han habilitado espacios para el disfrute de las personas. Kioscos y otros comercios se instalaron allí para vender comida y bebidas, incluyendo licores, además de ofrecer sillas y amenizar con música la estadía de los visitantes.
Playa San Luis suele ser muy popular en otras zonas lejos del caño, como en el Hotel Bordones y el hotel Venetur, el Casino Militar, el Colegio de Médicos y frente a la Universidad de Oriente. Desde todos estos lugares se puede observar un hermoso atardecer cumanés en una de esas postales donde en un tono rojizo se aprecia la salida del Golfo de Cariaco hacia el Mar Caribe.
