Anna Lidia Vega Serova is a Russian-born author who gives us in Three steps for a fish an anthology that compiles her first three books of short stories. In this work we can find many topics that could be considered taboo, but treated with special subtlety that lead to reflect on violence, drugs, promiscuity and lies, situations that permeate our daily lives and often occur in different societies.
On this occasion, I have selected four stories, which marked my pilgrimage through the twists and turns of these pages. Collage with photos and dances focuses on a group of young people who take refuge in drugs, promiscuity and alcohol to find meaning in their existence. The narrator shifts between two foci, first and third person, to deliver a story of unfulfilled longings, hilarious fantasies, unfinished loves and tragic endings. The absence of identity and self-love accentuates the emotional instability of the group, a situation that reaches the extreme when they fall into addiction. The hallucinogenic effects and the poetic language enrich the narrative, giving it solidity.
On the other hand, in Christmas Performance we are introduced to the story of a young woman who hates the Christmas holiday, which stems from a trauma she tries to forget. Although her memory tries to erase the past, the scars remain, marking her. The story is set up in such a way that the first part offers unknowns and the second part clears up the situation by externalizing the repressed memory. There is a strong message about the consequences of not dealing with child abuse, especially from the family circle, from a professional point of view.
In Rare People, the narrator is in the first person, focused on a writer, whose daily life is described as monotonous and boring. She considers her marriage as a prison from which she tries to escape on one occasion, but her plan fails because it turns out to be absurd. Longing and fantasy mix to precipitate the denouement, which leaves us with a hilarious scene. The underlying message is direct, in a couple's relationship there are two perceptions and they will not always be in sync. Intertextuality is also a resource that sustains the narrative, since each anecdote and event presented in the text is announced as raw material for future stories.
To end this selection, the story Fake Bills leads us down a strange path. As the story progresses, a man's plan to swindle a woman is uncovered. The honesty of the protagonist leads him to fall into a manipulation to the point of a sexual relationship, what started as a casual event turned out to be a plan. The scenes are very well described, to the point of provoking repulsion. The ending is sobering because the woman, when she realizes that she was the victim of a swindler, smiles because her honesty and compassion led her down a dangerous path, from which she emerged precisely because she lacked material ambition.

El narrador se desplaza entre dos focos, primera y tercera persona, para entregarnos una historia de anhelos que no llegan a concretarse, de fantasías hilarantes, de amores inconclusos y de finales trágicos. La ausencia de identidad y de amor propio acentúa la inestabilidad emocional del grupo, situación que llega al extremo al caer en la adicción. Los efectos alucinógenos y el lenguaje poético enriquecen la narración otorgándole solidez.
En cambio, en Performance de navidad nos adentra en la historia de una joven que odia esta festividad decembrina, lo que deriva de un trauma que pretende olvidar. Aunque su memoria intente borrar el pasado, las cicatrices permanecen marcándola. El relato está planteado de tal forma que la primera parte ofrece incógnitas y en la segunda se despeja la situación al exteriorizar el recuerdo reprimido. Se advierte entonces un fuerte mensaje sobre las consecuencias de no abordar el abuso infantil, sobre todo el proveniente del círculo familiar, desde un plano profesional.
En tanto en, Gente rara, el narrador está en primera persona, focalizado en una escritora, cuya cotidianidad es descrita como monótona y aburrida. Considera su matrimonio como una prisión de donde intenta escapar en una ocasión, pero su plan fracasa porque resulta absurdo. El anhelo y la fantasía se mezclan para precipitar el desenlace, el cual nos deja una escena hilarante. El mensaje subyacente es directo, en una relación de pareja son dos las percepciones y no siempre estarán en sintonía. La intertextualidad también es un recurso que sustenta la narración ya que cada anécdota y acontecimiento presentados en el texto son anunciados como materia prima para próximos cuentos.
Para finalizar esta selección, el relato Billetes falsos nos conduce por una senda extraña. A medida que avanza la narración se va descubriendo un plan de un hombre que pretende estafar a una mujer. La honestidad de la protagonista le lleva a caer en una manipulación hasta llegar al punto de una relación sexual, lo que inició como un evento casual resultó ser un plan. Las escenas están muy bien descritas, hasta el punto de provocar repulsión. El final es aleccionador porque la mujer, cuando se da cuenta que fue víctima de un estafador, sonríe porque su honradez y compasión le llevaron por un camino peligroso, de la cual salió justamente por carecer de ambición material.
