The fantastic narrative is quite wide, in what I have been able to read and investigate in recent weeks I have found different proposals, some more risky than others, but they coincide in the presence of magic, characters with powers, whether fairies, witches, elves, ogres or beings (human or animal) with some special gift. Sometimes, realities present us with extraordinary events that lead us to evoke this enchanted universe, where imagination is the only limitation to advance in the reading.
Today I will finish Gianni Rodari's anthology with the last two stories of his book. The first is entitled With lira in your pocket, the story begins with three brothers going through a difficult economic situation. In an effort to change their luck, the eldest goes out into the street to seek his fortune, with such a good star that after staying overnight in an inn, he wakes up and dresses in someone else's pants, which is magic, so every time he reaches into his pockets he pulls out a hundred lira coin.
Upon returning and telling his brothers that he had solved his problems, the middle one went out the next day to imitate his journey, for which reason he found a pair of pants whose pockets emitted a thousand lira bills. When he found out what had happened, the younger one also went to the inn to look for a magic pair of pants. As I have already stated in different posts, each story presents three possible endings, so each reader will select the one he/she likes the most. Beyond the proposals, in one of them the magic ends due to greed, the narrator invites us to reflect on what money represents in society. Easy wealth, in the hands of those who do not value effort and work, is squandered until it becomes a memory.
The last story is called The Traveling Cat, here the protagonist is a humanized cat, but he does not speak but keeps the meow as a sound to communicate. While traveling on a train to Bologna, three passengers who were in the same car observe the cat wearing elegant clothes, glasses and carrying a briefcase. Instead of being surprised by this discovery, people begin to criticize the animal, accusing it of spreading diseases, of not being a controllable pet and of having fleas and ticks on its fur.
In the face of rejection and phobias, the cat remained calm, even answering uncomfortable questions with meows that were interpreted by a young man who was part of the travelers. The answers were very intelligent, leaving in the atmosphere an evident contrast between humans and animals and, of course, a critique of prejudice. Among the alternative endings I liked the one suggesting that the young man was a ventriloquist using the cat for his tricks. There is also the alternative of being a robot cat very advanced for its time, taking the story into the realm of science fiction.
At the end, the narrator expresses his longing for a tomorrow in which humans and animals can understand each other in order to coexist in harmony on the only planet we have. As can be seen, children's literature may seem naïve, but it can also serve as a means to propose deeper and more reflective messages. I enjoyed reading Rodari, he stimulated my imagination in this journey through his narrative.

Hoy terminaré la antología de Gianni Rodari con los dos últimos cuentos de su libro. El primero se titula Con liras en el bolsillo, la historia inicia con tres hermanos atravesando una difícil situación económica. En aras de cambiar su suerte, el mayor sale a la calle a buscar fortuna, con tan buena estrella que tras pernoctar en una posada, despierta y se viste con el pantalón de otra persona, el cual es mágico, así que cada vez que mete la mano en los bolsillos saca una moneda de cien liras.
Al regresar y contarle a sus hermanos que ya ha resuelto sus problemas, el del medio sale al día siguiente a imitar su trayecto, por tal razón encuentra un pantalón cuyos bolsillos emiten billetes de mil liras. Al enterarse de lo ocurrido, el menor también salió para la posada a buscar un pantalón mágico. Como ya he manifestado en diferentes posts, cada cuento presenta tres finales posibles, así que cada lector seleccionará el que más le guste. Más allá de las propuestas, en una de ellas la magia se acaba debido a la codicia, el narrador nos invita a reflexionar sobre lo que representa el dinero en la sociedad. La riqueza fácil, en manos de quien no valora el esfuerzo y el trabajo, se va dilapidando, hasta quedar en un recuerdo.
El último relato lleva por nombre El gato viajero, acá el protagonista es un gato humanizado, pero que no habla sino que conserva el maullido como sonido para comunicarse. Al viajar en un tren hacía Bolonia, tres pasajeros que estaban en su mismo vagón observan al gato luciendo ropa elegante, anteojos y trasladando un portafolio. En lugar de sorprenderse ante aquel descubrimiento, las personas comienzan a criticar al animal, acusándolo de propagar enfermedades, de no ser una mascota controlable y de llevar pulgas y garrapatas en su pelaje.
Ante el rechazo y las fobias, el gato mantuvo la calma, inclusive respondía preguntas incómodas con maullidos que fueron interpretados por un joven que formaba parte de los viajeros. Las respuestas fueron muy inteligentes, dejando en el ambiente un evidente contraste entre humanos y animales y, por supuesto, se expone una crítica hacia los prejuicios. Entre los finales alternativos me agradó el que sugería que el joven era un ventrílocuo que utilizaba al gato para sus trucos. También se presenta la alternativa de estar ante un gato robot muy avanzado para su tiempo, llevando el relato al terreno de la ciencia ficción.
Al finalizar, el narrador expresa que anhela un mañana en el cual humanos y animales puedan comprenderse para de esta forma convivir en armonía en el único planeta que tenemos. Como se advierte, la literatura infantil puede parecer ingenua, pero también puede servir de medio para proponer mensajes más profundos y reflexivos. Me agradó leer a Rodari, incentivó mi imaginación en este viaje por su narrativa.
