The idea of conducting a poll about possible sequels to stories I've published in recent weeks was completed today, but it resulted in a tie, and now I'm curious which of the two stories should be prioritized. In that case, I'd prefer to conduct another poll, and if it results in another tie (which I don't expect), I would then have to work on both stories simultaneously.

Anyway, the current poll is at the bottom of this post, and let's hope that this time there's a clear winner.

The choices are:

  • The Truth Beneath the Tides: A science fiction story with social commentary, in which members of a race of fire ifrits discover facts that contradict the Council of Rulers, leading them to a desperate situation. They also seek to share the information they've uncovered with the rest of their race, while the group's leader does everything he can to save at least some of his companions.

  • Too Many People: In an underground refuge city, after a cataclysm, a resident begins to despair upon realizing that the city is headed for ruin and that his only viable path seems to be escaping the mad rulers and the naive people who continue blithely walking toward disaster, knowing that those who tried to warn the people earlier have already been silenced or eliminated.

I'm scheduling the survey to close on Wednesday, July 24th, at noon.

Thank you for your attention, participation, and feedback.

Sort:

Now that you mention it, both stories have a lot of social criticism.

In the Ifrits, there is a hyper-controlling government that has been hiding information from its population, to the point of eliminating anyone who contradicts the official discourse. And in the other story, the one about the underground shelter, both the government and the majority of the population happily move towards the disaster and eliminate anyone who tries to warn them of the problem.

I suppose the second story is worse because the humans who live in the shelter are much worse mentally; they cling to a faith that makes them act without reasoning, kill without thinking, and act without evaluating the consequences, and they also have an inept government that manages things more by beliefs of faith than by principles of administration, management, or any valid social scientific knowledge.

In the case of the first story, that of the ifrits, at least it seems that part of the population is not so crazy or stupid, so there is more hope that, upon receiving the information, they will be able to reason on their own and that the governing council will not have such a free hand to hide things this time. The bad thing is that in the already published story, the protagonist of the story leaves the scene; even though he leaves hope behind him, that gives him a sad touch.

I admit that my view may be a little pessimistic regarding the survival of characters who face very strong power groups, but hope transcends the characters themselves; it's like the theme of ideals, that is, even if the leaders of a movement die (and they will eventually die), their #ideals can transcend their existence.

Cheers to finishing your daily Ecency leaderboard quest, @pedrobrito2004! Your perspective on the enduring power of ideals beyond individual mortality is deeply profound.
