Beyond The Classroom

Hello, beautiful people! Welcome to my blog. It's a pleasure to have you in this space. Once again, welcome 🤗

This week's prompt got me to reflect on my educational journey, seriously I am reminded of the impact of teachers which extends far beyond the classroom walls. While one of the most important roles of the teacher is impacting knowledge on their pupils academically, I strongly believe that making students feel loved, valued, and supported is also part of their roles. Unfortunately, not all teachers have the capacity to strike this balance, they mostly leave an unforgettable mark in the learning experience of many.

While I was in secondary school i never had any teacher that I hated but I had these two teachers I was scared of.

They were my maths teachers in jss1(junior secondary school) and jss2. These teachers instilled fear in me rather than enthusiasm. The mere mention of their names would send shivers down my spine, and I dreaded their classes.

They were so strict. Their teaching style was scary and intimidating. It was as if they were more interested in displaying their authority than in teaching.

The fear of these teachers made me develop a phobia of mathematics, which I feel could have been avoided if only my teachers had taken a more compassionate approach. I remember feeling anxious and scared whenever it was their teaching period. Most times I used to wish something would happen so that I wouldn't be a part of their class. They would flog and rain insults on anyone who has no idea what they were teaching.

My fear for math was not because of the subject itself, but rather the way these teachers presented it to me. The negative experience made me felt that I was never going to be good with math.

However, everything changed when I got to SS3 (senior secondary school) and was preparing to write WAEC (West Africa Examination Council). My math teachers made me realize that math wasn't as difficult as I thought it to be.

He took a genuine interest in my understanding of math; he made out time to teach me separately whenever we both had free periods, offered words of encouragement, and created a safe and inclusive learning environment.

I personally feel teachers are not just in school to impart knowledge but to also help shape the confidence of their pupils.

THANK YOU FOR READING TO THE END 🤗

Sometimes I wonder if making Mathematics difficult for students is part of the things these teachers were taught in school because I don't get it. Mathematics is one of the simplest subjects, once you understand the formula, you're good to go. But some of these frustrated teachers will turn it into something you can't understand like amoeba 🤣

Asin ehnnn. They make it look like maths is very difficult

Yes the should be there to shape the students confidence.

Absolutely

It’s just sad that some teachers use that method to teach even though they know very well how maths is tough for some students normally.

Really it's sad
