I love introducing new treats for the critters in my yard. This time I offered the squirrels pecans for the first time. Squirrels are very skittish around unfamiliar things, so it was very amusing to watch them approach the newest nuts with the cutest of caution.
The peacns were a huge hit...at least among the squirrels. They seem to be a little too big for the chipmunks. Although I've seen them take walnuts before. Maybe the walnuts are easier to grip because the shells have ridges. Pecan shells are smooth. A couple of chipmunks showed up to the party anyway, leading to a territorial dispute.
Of course, no get-together would be complete without a bunny or two. I always try to have some blueberries on hand for such an occasion.
As I was editing the video footage for this upload, I noticed something peculiar about this rabbit. Just as it started to hop from my lawn onto my patio, it stuck it's tongue out. I've never seen a rabbit's tongue before as they don't really seem to use them very often.
After doing some research I learned that rabbits typically stick out their tongues as a way to cool down, express relaxation, or show curiosity. Any one of those reasons would make sense in this situation. Or, maybe it was just being one of those wascally wabbits.
