The buttons that waited too long
Recently I was looking through the drawers of a small chest in my home, trying to find something that could help me decorate some woven bags I had been working on. It was a simple search, something practical, something ordinary.
But life has a way of opening emotional doors through the most unexpected places.
While searching, I remembered a drawer in the small storage room that once belonged to my late mother-in-law.
I had not opened it in a long time.
When I finally did, I found it exactly as it had always been: quiet, full, and waiting.
Inside there were wooden buttons of different sizes and shapes, thick and thin threads in various colors, pieces of fabric carefully folded, and sewing materials that clearly had been chosen with intention. Everything inside that drawer felt like a pause, like a story interrupted in the middle of a sentence.
And suddenly I found myself thinking about her.
About how many plans she must have had at that time.
Each object there was not random. Each button, each thread, each piece of fabric had a purpose. Something she intended to create. Something she believed she would eventually have time for.
But time does not always wait for our intentions.
Looking at those materials, I realized something simple but profound: every item in that drawer carried a future that never arrived. Not because it was forgotten, but because life itself moved in another direction.
I chose a few of those wooden buttons.
Not because I needed them.
But because I felt they should finally become what they were meant to be.
Later, I used them to decorate the woven bags I had been making.
And while sewing them, I kept thinking about something that stayed with me longer than expected.
How many things do we keep “for later”?
Projects we postpone.
Conversations we delay.
People we plan to visit.
Words we decide not to say yet.
Hugs we assume will still be available tomorrow.
We store them all somewhere in our emotional drawers, believing there will always be time to return.
But sometimes there isn’t.
Sometimes life moves forward without asking permission.
That is why that drawer felt so important to me.
It was not just a collection of sewing materials.
It was a collection of postponed intentions.
And yet, instead of seeing it only with sadness, I also saw something else.
A quiet dignity in those objects.
Because even if their original purpose was delayed, they were not meaningless.
They were still waiting to become something.
And in a way, I felt that using those buttons was not about erasing memory.
It was about completing a cycle.
About finally allowing something that was once planned to become real, even if through different hands, in a different time, under a different story.
As I sewed them onto the woven bags, I felt as if I was giving those buttons a second life.
And maybe, in some quiet way, also giving closure to a story that had remained open for too long.
Since that day, I look at the things I keep differently.
Not everything we store is just an object.
Sometimes it is a postponed life.
Sometimes it is a version of ourselves that never had the chance to arrive.
And perhaps the most difficult realization is this:
Some things can wait.
But people, feelings, and moments do not always have that same luxury.
That drawer taught me something simple, but permanent:
What we delay too long may never return in the same form.
And what we choose to do today might be the only chance we have to give meaning to something that once had none.

Hace poco estaba revisando entre las gavetas de una cómoda en mi casa, buscando algo que me permitiera adornar unas jabas tejidas en las que estaba trabajando. Era una búsqueda simple, algo práctico, algo cotidiano.
Pero la vida tiene la costumbre de abrir puertas emocionales en los lugares más inesperados.
Mientras buscaba, recordé una gaveta del cuarto de desahogo que pertenecía a mi difunta suegra.
Hacía mucho tiempo que no la abría.
Cuando finalmente lo hice, la encontré tal como siempre había estado: silenciosa, llena y en espera.
Dentro había botones de madera de diferentes tamaños y formas, hilos gruesos y finos de múltiples colores, pedazos de tela cuidadosamente doblados y materiales de costura que claramente habían sido guardados con intención. Todo en esa gaveta transmitía una sensación de pausa, como una historia detenida a mitad de camino.
Y de repente pensé en ella.
En cuántos planes tendría en aquel momento.

No era solo una colección de materiales de costura.
