That's right, today I bring you an anime about space cats and college students who love household appliances. Honestly, I think my anime repertoire has changed a lot in recent seasons. We continue with the Slice of Life genre with this animated series which, unlike the previous ones, has a detail that particularly caught my attention. Instead of traveling, food, or music, this story tells us about the life of a college student whose mission is to learn about the technology on planet Earth in order to help her alien pet rebuild an entire extraterrestrial civilization. With that premise, it's obvious that any science fiction fan like me would stay tuned to watch it.

But unfortunately for me and possibly many others, things are not what they seem in this anime. Me and the Alien MuMu is, I repeat, a Slice of Life anime, and like any other anime of its kind, we see the ordinary, everyday life of a college student who learns about appliances and electrical devices in order to help her space cat and new pet, MuuMuu. If you're looking for action, drama, or any other element commonly seen in works related to aliens, this series has very few moments like that. You could even say that they can be counted on one hand, at most. For a 24-episode series, this is very little, so you can imagine how "boring" the rest of the time can be.

Así es, un anime de gatos espaciales y universitarios amantes de los electrodomésticos es lo que les traigo hoy. Sinceramente considero que mi repertorio de animes ha variado muchísimo en estas últimas temporadas. Y es que continuamos con el género Slice of Life con esta serie animada que, a diferencia de las anteriores, tiene un detalle que me llamó particularmente la atención. En vez de tratarse de viajes, comida o música, esta historia nos relata la vida de una estudiante universitaria que tiene como misión aprender de la tecnología que hay en el planeta tierra para así ayudar a su mascota alienígena a reconstruir toda una civilización extraterrestre. Con dicha premisa, es obvio que cualquier fanático de la ciencia ficción como yo se quedaría a verla.

Pero para desgracia tanto de mi persona como de muchos -posiblemente-, las cosas no son lo que aparentan ser en este anime. Me and the Alien MuMu es, repito, un Slice of Life y como cualquier otro anime de su tipo vemos lo que es la vida cotidiana, común y corriente de una estudiante universitaria que aprende de electrodomésticos y aparatos eléctricos para así ayudar a su gato espacial y nueva mascota, MuuMuu. Si es de poseer acción, drama o cualquier otro elemento comúnmente visto en obras relacionadas a extraterrestres, esta serie tiene muy pocos momentos así. Incluso podría decirse que son contados con una mano, como mucho. Esto, para una serie de 24 capítulos es poquísimo, por lo cual ya sabrán lo “aburrido” que puede llegar a ser el resto del tiempo.

That's right, because as I said at the beginning, another curious fact about this anime is how educational it is when it comes to electrical and electronic devices. There are many episodes entirely dedicated to teaching us the composition and function of each device and how they help facilitate certain tasks in everyday life. All this while we see how each character develops, learns, and adapts to a somewhat peculiar environment, one might say. Because another interesting point about this work is how bizarre it can be.

Just starting with the theme of space cats is more than enough to give you an idea of where everything I'm going to tell you is going. While they don't change much from how cats normally are, MuuMuu is a cat that can easily go unnoticed, as long as there are no appliances within his reach. When that happens, he destroys it completely, but without damaging any components. He does this in order to analyze the equipment piece by piece. However, our space cat has a serious disadvantage: he is neither a genius nor anything like it. The scientists on his planet perished with him, so all that remains are a few groups of alien felines who are the most destructive and stupid faction there is.

Eso sí, obviamente, buscas una historia más de ciencia ficción con acción y drama, repito. Pero si esa no es tu intención, entonces puede que esta historia te interese y más si te llama la atención el tema de los electrodomésticos por lo que enseñan. Así es, porque como dije al principio, otro dato curioso de este anime es lo educativo que llega a ser en cuanto a estos temas de los aparatos eléctricos y electrónicos. Hay muchos capítulos enteramente dedicados a enseñarnos la composición y función de cada equipo y cómo estos ayudan a facilitar ciertas tareas en la vida diaria. Todo esto mientras vemos cómo se desenvuelven, aprenden y se adaptan cada personaje a un ambiente un tanto peculiar, podría decirse. Porque otro punto interesante de esta obra es lo bizarro que puede llegar a ser.

Ya con empezar con el tema de los gatos espaciales es más que suficiente como para darse una idea de para dónde va todo lo que les voy a contar. Si bien no cambian mucho a como son los gatos normalmente, MuuMuu es un gato que fácilmente puede pasar desapercibido, siempre y cuando no haya ningún electrodoméstico a su alcance. Cuando es así, lo destruye por completo, pero sin dañar ningún componente. Esto lo hace para analizar dichos equipos pieza por pieza. Sin embargo, nuestro gato espacial tiene una desventaja grave y es que no es ni un genio ni nada parecido. Los científicos de su planeta perecieron con ella, así que solo quedan algunos grupos de felinos extraterrestres que son de la facción más destructiva y estúpida que hay.

This is where the luck of our protagonist, Sakurako Umeyashiki, begins to run out (as if being the victim of a close encounter of the third or fourth kind wasn't enough). I say this because she will be the one responsible for learning about these appliances and technology in general to help MuuMuu save her own species from extinction. To do this, she joins a club at the university she attends where they repair and work with such equipment. The president of this club is like a mad genius, with a very difficult personality. Even so, his knowledge of appliances and technology will be very useful to our protagonist.

With this in mind, you will surely have an idea of what the rest of the anime is about. Although the premise is very appealing with the theme of aliens and all that, it is not far from what would be the daily life of a japanese college student with shyness and self-esteem issues. As in all Slice of Life stories, this story takes its time to develop as we meet various characters with whom we can gradually become familiar. They may not be the best characters in the world, but they don't leave you completely indifferent either, thanks to the way the anime develops each one. Some characters tend to be quite superficial, while others are clearly developed in a special way. An example of this is the club president, for example.

Es aquí donde la suerte de nuestra protagonista, Sakurako Umeyashiki, empieza a desaparecer (como si no fuera suficiente que fuera víctima de un contacto cercano del tercer o cuarto tipo). Esto lo digo ya que ella será la que se encargará de aprender de dichos electrodomésticos y de la tecnología en general para ayudar a MuuMuu a salvar a su propia especie de la extinción. Para esto, se une a un club de la universidad en la que asiste donde se reparan y trabajan con dichos equipos. El presidente de este club es como un genio loco, con una personalidad muy difícil de tratar. Aún así, sus conocimientos sobre electrodomésticos y tecnología le serán de mucha utilidad para nuestra protagonista.

Ya con esto en mente seguramente tendrán una idea de lo que va el resto del anime. Si bien la premisa llama mucho la atención con el tema de los extraterrestres y todo eso, no se aleja mucho de lo que sería la vida diaria de una universitaria japonesa con problemas de timidez y autoestima. Como en todo Slice of Life, esta historia se toma su tiempo para desarrollarse mientras conocemos a diversos personajes con los que podemos familiarizarnos poco a poco. No es que sean los mejores personajes del mundo, pero tampoco te dejan completamente indiferente gracias a la forma en la que el anime los desarrolla a cada uno. Algunos personajes tienden a ser bastante superficiales, mientras que otros se nota que se desarrollan de una manera especial. Un ejemplo de esto es el presidente del club, por ejemplo.

But the character that caught my attention the most throughout the anime was undoubtedly MuuMuu, and not just because he's a talkative cat, but because of his origin and development. At first, he's like any stray cat that does whatever he wants, destroys everything, and spends most of his time at home wasting time, all while knowing that he has an important mission to fulfill. But as the episodes progress, with the addition of secondary characters related to the invasion, such as alien cats, and the sightings and "accidents" that subsequently occur in this city we see how MuuMuu reacts and acts in a very unexpected way, while we see certain glimpses of his past that are very striking.

It's hard to find seriousness or drama in this work, especially if it's a Slice of Life with talkative cats. On the contrary, it's the humor that often makes you stop applying logic or meaning to everything you see in its episodes. Of course, being partially an educational series, humor is implemented as a distraction so that the viewer doesn't lose interest. And I think that the way the characters relate to each other, the cases they deal with, and the way the humor is always there every minute makes this series a little more entertaining than anyone could imagine at first glance. I have nothing against the humor in this anime, but sometimes it gets so absurd that it becomes tiresome.

Pero el personaje que más me llamó la atención durante todo el anime fue indudablemente MuuMuu y no solo por ser un gato parlanchín, sino por su origen y desarrollo. Al principio es como cualquier gato callejero que hace lo que le da la gana, destruye todo y se la pasa mayormente en casa perdiendo el tiempo; todo esto a sabiendas de que tiene una misión importante por cumplir. Pero con el paso de los episodios, la incorporación de personajes secundarios relacionados a la invasión como gatos extraterrestres y los casos de avistamientos y “accidentes” que posteriormente ocurren en esta ciudad veremos cómo MuuMuu reacciona y actúa de una manera muy inesperada mientras vemos ciertos pinceles de su pasado que llaman mucho la atención.

Es difícil encontrarle seriedad o drama a esta obra, sobre todo si es un Slice of Life con gatos parlanchines. Por el contrario, es el humor que tiene lo que muchas veces hace que uno deje de aplicarle la lógica o el sentido a todo lo que ves en sus episodios. Claro, al ser parcialmente una serie educativa, el humor se implementa como una medida de distracción para que el espectador no pierda el interés. Y considero que la forma en la que se relacionan los personajes, los casos que tratan y la manera en la que el humor siempre se encuentra ahí en cada minuto hace que esta serie sea un tanto más entretenida de lo que cualquiera podría llegar a imaginar a simple vista. No tengo nada en contra del humor que maneja este anime, pero a veces llega a ser bastante absurdo que cansa.

What I did like a lot was the way they ended this adaptation with a dramatic, action-packed plot twist that made the whole journey from the first episode onwards worthwhile. I really liked the introduction of the final villain—I won't mention any names to avoid spoilers—as it is closely related to MuuMuu's past and origins. It's because of this small detail that I finally decided to review it (right after it recently finished airing) and bring it to you today. You might like it simply because of the space cats, or because of the interesting plot, or because of how educational it can be.

You may also be attracted to or identify with a character, such as Sakurako, for example, who, being someone with self-esteem issues, is someone many can relate to. And I'm not surprised by this, as it's a particular way of capturing the audience's attention by presenting a protagonist who is very different from those commonly seen in any anime today. You know, those typical protagonists who seek to be heroes, popular, or something like that. You don't see any of that here, since it's a Slice of Life anime, and like all Slice of Life anime, it's normal to see a female protagonist with particular problems mainly related to her self-esteem or her relationship with society.

Lo que sí me gustó bastante es la forma en la que le dan fin a esta adaptación con un arco y un giro de guión dramático y repleto de acción que hace que todo el trayecto desde el primer episodio en adelante valiera la pena. La introducción del villano final -para no darles mucho spoiler no diré nombres- me gustó mucho ya que está bastante relacionado con el pasado y origen de MuuMuu. Es por este pequeño detalle que decidí al final hacerle una reseña (justo después de concluida su emisión hace poco) y traérsela a ustedes hoy. Puede que les guste simplemente por los gatos espaciales, también por la trama interesante que tiene o por lo educativo que puede llegar a ser.

También puede que les atraiga o se identifiquen con algún personaje, como es el caso de Sakurako, por ejemplo, que al ser alguien con problemas de autoestima es normal que muchos se sientan familiarizados con ella. Y no me sorprende esto ya que es una forma particular de captar la atención del público al presentar a un protagonista muy diferente a los que comúnmente uno ve en cualquier anime de hoy en día. Ya saben, esos típicos protagonistas que buscan ser héroes, populares o alguna cosa por el estilo. Aquí no se ve nada de eso, ya que es un Slice of Life, y como todo Slice of Life es normal ver a una protagonista femenina con problemas particulares mayormente relacionados a su autoestima o a su trato con la sociedad.

It's curious that these types of calm anime with ordinary stories have characters with problems and difficulties that sound quite realistic and even profound. Obviously, this is what anyone will find when they come across a Seinen, since the stories and characters end up developing in a more realistic way, taking real life as a reference in order to connect more with the viewer. And I think Me and the Alien MuMu is an anime like that, if we take away the humor and the sci-fi subplot taken from popular culture and the common tastes of a cat lover. It wouldn't be the best example to discover a seinen, but it's not all bad either.

Last but not least, let's talk about the audiovisual aspect of this anime. While it has a certain level of quality, it is far from being the best of the season. But at least it manages to give us a certain fluidity, quality, and quite pleasant visual details. The character designs are not bad; the drawing style seems a bit simple, but also somewhat attractive. The bright and vivid color palette also catches the eye. As for the sound effects, they're not bad at all, but I'd like to talk more about the soundtrack of this anime. The melodies are very original, especially with the frequent and varied flute tunes that can be heard. I think this gives it a somewhat humorous and otherworldly touch, I think. Anyway, this is an anime for those who like cats, aliens, and appliances.

Personally, I give it a rating of 8/10 in terms of the Slice of Life and science fiction genres.

Es curioso que este tipo de animes tranquilos y con historias comunes y corrientes tengan personajes con problemas y dificultades que suenan bastante realistas y hasta profundos. Obviamente, esto es lo que cualquiera encontrará al toparse con un Seinen, ya que las historias y los personajes terminan desarrollándose de una manera más realistas tomando con referencia la vida real para así compaginar más con el espectador. Y considero que Me and the Alien MuMu es un anime así, solo si le quitamos el montón de humor que tiene y su subtrama de ciencia ficción sacada de la cultura popular y los gustos comunes de un amante de los gatos. No sería el mejor ejemplo para descubrir un seinen, pero tampoco es que esté mal del todo.

Por último, pero no menos importante, hablemos del apartado audiovisual de este anime. Si bien tiene cierto nivel de calidad, se encuentra muy lejos de ser lo mejor de la temporada. Pero al menos cumple con darnos cierta fluidez, calidad y detalles visuales bastante agradables. Los diseños de los personajes no están mal, el estilo de dibujo parece un tanto simple, pero algo atractivo también. La paleta de colores vivos y brillantes también llama la atención. En cuanto a los efectos de sonido no está nada mal, pero quisiera hablar más de la banda sonora de este anime. Las melodías son muy originales, sobre todo con las tonadas de flautas variantes y frecuentes que se escuchan. Considero que esto le da un toque un tanto humorístico y a la vez de otro mundo, creo. En fin, este es un anime para los que les gustan los gatos, los extraterrestres y los electrodomésticos.

Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 8/10 en lo que respecta al género del Slice of Life y la ciencia ficción.
