Guaiacum sanctum es el nombre científico del Guayacán Real, este árbol que encontramos en las aceras de muchas calles como por ejemplo en El Tigre/Anzoátegui país Venezuela la ciudad donde vivo. Cuenta la historia de esta ciudad que los árboles de Guayacán Real lo trajeron los pobladores que se trasladaron desde la Isla de Margarita estado Nueva Esparta cuando hubo aquélla expansión del Oro Negro (petróleo), muchos hombres llegaron a esta zona en la búsqueda de mejores condiciones de vida para ellos y su familia.
Se trata de la especie forestal más célebre, tanto del Bosque Tropical Seco, como de la Cuenca del Mar Caribe, de las cuales es nativa, y donde su población se encuentra actualmente severamente disminuida.
El guayacán real, o lignum-vitae, tal como se le conoce popularmente en el idioma inglés, comenzó a irrumpir en el escenario mundial a partir de finales del siglo XV, luego de la llegada de Cristóbal Colón a las islas del Mar Caribe.

Para cuando los españoles llegaron a América, el guayacán real se encontraba en abundancia en las islas caribeñas, y el uso rutinario de esta madera, así como de la resina aceitosa que contiene, llamada el guayacol, formaban parte de la cultura indígena encontrada.
Volviendo a la historia de los margariteños, la mayoría de estas personas en la Isla hacían el oficio del zapatero su primera actividad económica para lograr el sustento económico. Pues, El Tigre y la zona donde vivo sus primeros pobladores fueron los migrantes de esta Isla, ellos trajeron su cultura sobre todo musical, culinaria y esta planta; para plantar y dar sombra en el frente de estas casas que fueron construyendo con el paso del tiempo y sus mejoras salariales al entrar en el mundo de las compañías petroleras.

El árbol Guayacán Real, presenta diversas características emblemáticas y valiosas de las zonas tropicales de América, incluyendo Venezuela. También es conocido como Palo Santo o Lignum Vitae (Árbol de la Vida), debido a la dureza extrema de su madera. Produce unas pequeñas flores de un color azul violáceo intenso, que con el tiempo y el sol se van aclarando hasta volverse casi blancas, en realidad no me he percatado el color blanco en sus flores) por lo general las flores azules sí.

Sus hojas son redondeadas, brillantes y crecen en forma densa, lo que la convierte en un árbol excelente para la sombra. Por ello, quizás esas personas trajeron estas plantas, aunque su crecimiento es muy lento para poder disfrutar de esta sombra a corto tiempo. La madera es considerada como una de las más pesadas y duras del mundo. La madera del Guayacán se hunde en el agua.
Hace unos meses, en la acera de la casa de una vecina había dos plantadas desde que sus padres llegaron a esta zona, una historia de hace más de 80 años, la primera cayó sin ton ni son y la otra también tiempo después. Estos procesos los considero energéticos porque los padres de ella quienes sembraron estos árboles fallecieron hace unos cuantos años, siento que estas plantas fueron su legado, meses antes de fallecer mi suegra que también es parte de la historia de los pobladores que llegaron de la Isla de Margarita cayó la segunda, quizás nadie le dio ese significado pero yo sí, tres personas pilares y estas plantas cayeron.
Hay calles donde estas plantas son tan adultas y allí siguen ofreciendo sus bellas flores, frutos para reproducirse y sus hojas que proveen de mucha sombra. Como símbolo natural es el árbol emblemático del estado Nueva Esparta en Venezuela, la historia de esto en párrafos anteriores. Es una planta que encaja perfectamente con un estilo de jardín de bajo mantenimiento alta longevidad.

Así sigo observando con más interés las plantas que veo todos los días en mis caminatas matutinas, esta la que comparto hoy está a media cuadra de mi casa.

Guaiacum sanctum is the scientific name for the Royal Guayacán, a tree we find lining the sidewalks of many streets, such as in El Tigre, Anzoátegui, Venezuela, the city where I live. The history of this city tells us that the Royal Guayacán trees were brought by settlers who migrated from Margarita Island, Nueva Esparta state, during the oil boom. Many men arrived in this area seeking better living conditions for themselves and their families.
It is the most celebrated tree species of both the Tropical Dry Forest and the Caribbean Basin, where it is native, and where its population is currently severely diminished.
The royal lignum vitae, as it is popularly known in English, began to emerge on the world stage in the late 15th century, following Christopher Columbus's arrival in the Caribbean islands.
By the time the Spanish arrived in the Americas, the royal lignum vitae was abundant in the Caribbean islands, and the routine use of this wood, as well as its oily resin called guaiacol, was part of the indigenous culture they encountered.
Returning to the history of the people of Margarita Island, most of them made their living as shoemakers. The first inhabitants of El Tigre and the area where I live were migrants from this island, bringing their culture, especially their music and cuisine, and this tree; they planted it to provide shade in front of the houses they built over time, as their wages improved when they entered the world of oil companies.
The Royal Guayacán tree exhibits several emblematic and valuable characteristics of the tropical regions of the Americas, including Venezuela. It is also known as Palo Santo or Lignum Vitae (Tree of Life) due to the extreme hardness of its wood. It produces small, intensely violet-blue flowers that, with time and sun exposure, fade to almost white (I haven't actually noticed the white color in its flowers; the blue flowers are usually more noticeable).
Its leaves are rounded, glossy, and grow densely, making it an excellent shade tree. Perhaps this is why those people brought these plants, although their growth is too slow to provide shade in a short time. The wood is considered one of the heaviest and hardest in the world. Guayacán wood sinks in water. A few months ago, on the sidewalk in front of a neighbor's house, there were two trees planted since her parents arrived in this area—a story from over 80 years ago. The first one fell for no apparent reason, and the second one followed some time later. I consider these events energetic because her parents, who planted these trees, passed away a few years ago. I feel that these plants were their legacy. Months before my mother-in-law, who is also part of the history of the settlers who came from Margarita Island, passed away, the second tree fell. Perhaps no one else understood its significance, but I did: three pillars of the community, and these trees fell.
There are streets where these trees are so old, and they continue to offer their beautiful flowers, fruit for reproduction, and leaves that provide ample shade. As a natural symbol, it is the emblematic tree of the state of Nueva Esparta in Venezuela; the story of this was told in previous paragraphs. It is a plant that fits perfectly with a low-maintenance, long-lasting garden style.
So I continue to observe with more interest the plants I see every day on my morning walks; this one I'm sharing today is half a block from my house.
