Hello my dear travelers, today I invite you to visit some sculptural jewels that are on display at the "Christopher Columbus" necropolis in Havana.

This necropolis dates back to 1886, it has its main entrance right at the intersection of Zapata Avenue and 12th Street in Vedado. It was declared a National Monument of Cuba in 1987 because it contains a large number of sculptural and monumental works of high artistic and historical value that resemble a large open-air museum.

In its 56 hectares it has more than 52000 properties including mausoleums, chapels, pantheons, statues, there is a diversity of architectural styles and materials such as stone, marble of various types and colors where white marble predominates.

It combines very well the greenery of the trees planted along the avenues and streets of the cemetery, providing shade, freshness and at the same time life to the birds that with their song make the visit more pleasant in moments of sadness and contribute to the harmony of the architectural complex.

I have visited this cemetery many times, but it was always related to the pain and sadness of losing a family member or a dear friend and although I was aware of the beauty of the place I never stopped to contemplate it with the admiration it deserved.

On this occasion I made a visit with the intention of knowing and admiring up close the works of art that are on display, but above all my main objective was to know a sculpture that the Cuban artist Rita Longa made for a family pantheon, I am an admirer of her art and I like to see her works up close.

When we arrive at the necropolis, the first great sculptural work we see is the imposing main entrance, it consists of 3 large arch-shaped doors, the central door is the largest and has at the top a sculptural set made of Carrara marble made by the Cuban sculptor José Vilalta that represent the three theological virtues: charity, faith and hope. At its base is the phrase "JANUA SUM PACIS", which means I AM THE DOOR OF PEACE.

Upon entering we see a wide avenue called Cristóbal Colón and it is where the most valuable pantheons and sculptures are located on both sides. This avenue leads us to the chapel that is located in the center of the cemetery where religious ceremonies are officiated. It was built in 1886 and is the only octagonal chapel in Cuba, its beautiful stained glass windows were made in Cologne, Germany.

It was not difficult to find the sculpture I wanted to see, it is located in the Aguilera family pantheon very close to the entrance. It already had a reference of its address since the streets are named with numbers and letters and each cemetery has its address for easy location.

This pantheon has a modern, simple and elegant design, it was made in 1957 with black and white marble, the entrance grille is only decorated with a Latin cross that is visually projected on the sculpture "La Pietà" by Rita Longa.

The white marble sculpture stands out strongly against the black marble and represents the Virgin Mary holding the inert body of Jesus. I really like the work of this artist because she gives a softness and sensuality to any material she works with. Here the artist made her work beautifully achieved in tune with the simplicity, elegance and modernity of the chapel.

As a curious fact I will tell you that in 1959 the Aguilera family left the country and settled in the United States, so this tomb remains empty. The passage of time has been deteriorating the sculpture, it needs urgent restoration, it is a pity that such a beautiful work is lost.

"Pietà" is the representation, through paintings and sculptures, of the Virgin Mary's pain in holding the body of Christ when he is taken down from the cross. The most famous work is Michelangelo's sculpture made in 1499 and is located in St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican.

In this necropolis there is a magnificent replica of Michelangelo's "Pietà", sculpted in marble, it has a high artistic value and is in the pantheon of Miguel G. de Mendoza, but unfortunately the author of this excellent replica is unknown. The tomb is in the most central and expensive area where the monuments of great sculptural value are located.

Friends, when I entered this fascinating open-air museum with the gaze of someone who appreciates good art, I found wonderful works on my way, I knew moments of history reflected in the monuments, also legends and myths that I would like to share with you at another time because this post has already become very long.
It is my wish that you have enjoyed learning about these works related to "Pietà" and I invite you to visit this Cuban national monument.
See you soon!
