ENGLISH VERSION

Hello dear friends, today I join the challenge of our friend @tattoodjay to share a very special day out, an experience that left me speechless: the visit to the workshop of the renowned and multi-award-winning Cuban artist Choco (Eduardo Roca Salazar), master of engraving, collagraph, and ceramics, whose works are exhibited in important art galleries around the world.

Choco's workshop is neither a luxurious studio nor a minimalist space with white walls. It's located on a small street in a humble neighborhood of Old Havana, and that simplicity makes it even more special. Upon entering, I was greeted by a space full of life: paintings hung on the walls and works of different styles occupied every corner of the studio.

In the center, his work table, small and simple, but a witness to the creation of masterful pieces. Around it, the tools and materials he uses: worn paintbrushes, pieces of cardboard, found objects waiting for a second life. There were no luxuries, but there was a creative energy that was palpable in the air.

What struck me most was his technique, as unique as it is sustainable. Choco doesn't work with expensive materials; his raw materials are cardboard, carpentry glue, and recycled objects that many would consider trash. But in his hands, these humble materials are transformed into pieces full of strength and symbolism.

They explained to us that the process begins with cardboard, which he gives structure and strength with a layer of glue. Then, he incorporates all kinds of discarded elements—pieces of wood, plastics, fabrics, metal fragments—which he meticulously glues together to create volume and texture.

The result is a solid base, ready to receive color and become a sculpture with its own soul.

Once the structure is assembled, it's time for color. Choco paints with a vibrant palette. I was struck by how the finishes don't seek to hide the origin of the materials, but rather to enhance them: up close, you can identify the objects used. And this allows us to view the works with multiple readings; as we contemplate them, we discover new interpretations.

Beyond the technique, what moved me most was the philosophy behind his work. In a world of excessive consumption, Choco demonstrates that art isn't born only from the new, but from the ability to see potential where others see waste. His sculptures, robust and full of character, are a tribute to resilience, both in materials and in the human spirit.

If I had already admired his work from a distance, seeing his creative process in person was like discovering the magic behind his works.

It was a great privilege to witness how this great artist brings his works to life, in a space as humble as it was inspiring. I left his studio with a clear lesson: true art is not only contemplated, it is felt and lived. And Choco, with his mastery and humility, manages to make each of his pieces transform the ephemeral into eternal.

¿Has tenido alguna experiencia similar?
