In the Plaza de la Catedral, located in the old Casa de Baños, we find this emblematic building, on the corner of San Ignacio and Callejón del Chorro. This gallery resides in a place with a fascinating history. It was the last construction to be erected in this square, due to the presence of a cistern, a cistern that supplied water to the buildings in the area. In 1854, a fruit warehouse was built on this site, which would later be transformed into the first public bath in Havana, keeping its name to this day.

En la Plaza de la Catedral, ubicdo en la antigua Casa de Baños , nos encontramos con ese emblemático edificio, en la esquina de San Ignacio y Callejón del Chorro. Esta galería reside en un lugar con una historia fascinante. Fue la última construcción en erigirse en esta plaza, debido a la presencia de un aljibe, un cisterna que abastecía de agua a los edificios de la zona. En 1854, en este sitio se construyó un almacén de frutas, que luego se transformaría en el primer baño público de La Habana, manteniendo su nombre hasta nuestros días.
This two-story building, next to the Palace of the Marquis of Aguas Claras, still preserves vestiges of its past. On the corner, an ancient marble fountain is embedded in the wall, a silent testimony to its original function as a water supplier for the city's inhabitants and the sailors arriving at the port. Its sober and refined architecture, although different from the rest of the square, blends perfectly into this historic complex.

En la esquina, una antigua fuente de mármol se encuentra incrustada en la pared, testimonio silencioso de su función original como abastecedor de agua para los habitantes de la ciudad y los marineros que llegaban al puerto. Su arquitectura sobria y refinada, aunque diferente al resto de la plaza, se integra perfectamente en este complejo histórico.
But what really attracted me was the gallery and arts and crafts shop that today occupies this space. The high windows, which extend from the ceiling to the floor, allowed a glimpse of the works of art displayed inside, inviting me to enter.
Pero lo que realmente me atrajo fue la galería y tienda de artes y manualidades que hoy ocupa este espacio. Los altos ventanales, que se extienden desde el techo hasta el piso, permitían vislumbrar las obras de arte expuestas en su interior, invitándome a entrar.
Once inside, I was fascinated by the perfect symbiosis between architecture and art. The huge doors and windows, the beautiful stained glass windows that cover the upper part of the windows, letting the light filter through and illuminate the works, create a magical atmosphere. The gallery is divided into two spaces: an exhibition area and a commercial area, where crafts and works of art are sold, some displayed in elegant display cases. Lamps, metal ornaments, clocks, decorative plates and wood carvings, among other pieces, are displayed with care and good taste.
Una vez dentro, me fascinó la perfecta simbiosis entre arquitectura y arte. Las enormes puertas y ventanales, los hermosos vitrales que cubren la parte superior de las ventanas, dejando que la luz se filtre e ilumine las obras, crean una atmósfera mágica. La galería se divide en dos espacios: un área de exposición y un área comercial, donde se venden artesanías y obras de arte, algunas expuestas en elegantes vitrinas. Lámparas, adornos de metal, relojes, platos decorativos y tallas de madera, entre otras piezas, se muestran con cuidado y buen gusto.
The original structure of the building has been preserved with respect and sensitivity. The wooden ceilings, painted blue, contrast with the stone block walls and metal columns. The brick work on some walls and on the columns, before the wood of the ceiling, is an architectural delight.
La estructura original del edificio ha sido preservada con respeto y sensibilidad. Los techos de madera, pintados de azul, contrastan con las paredes de bloques de piedra y las columnas de metal. The two main exhibition rooms feature paintings by contemporary artists, although one of them also displays some works on metal pieces and tables in addition to the walls. The other room, in addition to the paintings, has iron furniture decorated with ceramics, creating a unique and eclectic atmosphere.

There is an exceptional work by the Cuban artist Rubén Fernández, a painting that captivated me for its intensity and the way it addresses the viewer. His large eyes seem to follow you with an intense and alert gaze, no matter where you are in the room. The skill of Fernández, a self-taught artist, is evident in the way he creates multiple aspects and expressions in a single work, provoking a singular experience.
Hay una obra excepcional del artista cubano Rubén Fernández, un cuadro que me cautivó por su intensidad y la forma en que se dirige al espectador. Sus grandes ojos parecen seguirte con una mirada intensa y alerta, sin importar en qué lugar de la sala te encuentres. La habilidad de Fernández, artista autodidacta, se evidencia en la forma en que crea múltiples aspectos y expresiones en una sola obra, provocando una experiencia singular.
