Hola, mis,amigos. Los saludo desde La Habana en esta tarde supercalurosa.
Si hay un lugar en esta capital que respira cultura por los cuatro costados, esa es la Biblioteca Nacional de Cuba José Martí. Y que mejor nombre que el de nuestro apóstol, nuestro Héroe Nacional. La Biblioteca es un lugar que conozco y me resulta muy familiar ya que muchas veces la he visitado, primero por curiosidad, luego por necesidad y al final por invitación a diferentes actividades culturales. Hoy pasé frenta a ella y no pude evitar hacerle varias fotos, una de las cuales ahora comparto con ustedes.
Este no es solo un edificio imponente frente a la Plaza de la Revolución, es la casa de todos los que alguna vez han buscado una historia entre páginas, un dato perdido o simplemente un rato de paz. Esta mole no es un monumento frío, es un gigante con alma. Allí reina un silencio casi sepulcrar. Tiempo atrás era muy visitada, pero el despliegue de la tecnología digital ha hecho que eso merme.
Esta institución es la principal de las bibliotecas públicas del país. Aquí no solo se guardan libros, sino que se protege un patrimonio documental, artístico y sonoro de valor incalculable. Entrar en sus salas es como viajar en el tiempo. Tiene colecciones que enamoran a cualquiera. Está la Sala de Arte “Wifredo Lam”, con una colección de carteles cubanos que es una crónica gráfica de la historia y una cantidad impresionante de catálogos y diapositivas. Además, aquí se custodian manuscritos, grabados y joyas literarias desde el siglo XVIII hasta el XIX. Es el paraíso para cualquier investigador o curioso que quiera saber de verdad de dónde venimos.
Y lo mejor es que, aunque parece un refugio de sabios, la Biblioteca Nacional es de los que la quieren usar. Sus grandes ventanales de cristal regalan un fresco bendito. Lo se por las veces que tuve que ir a cursos de literatura y promoción cultural. Es de acceso libre, público y gratuito. Tiene una sala circulante y una infantil y juvenil que es una maravilla para despertar el amor por la lectura en los más pequeños. Además, se han puesto al día con los tiempos, ofreciendo servicios digitales y un sitio web para acceder a documentos que son difíciles de encontrar en formato impreso. Hasta tienen mediateca para los que prefieren lo digital.
La vida de esta biblioteca ha sido más movida que un carnaval de Rio de Janeiro. Ante estuvo ubicada en otras partes de la ciudad, pero no fue hasta 1958 que se instaló en su majestuoso edificio actual, y en 2021 fue declarada Monumento Nacional, como debía ser desde hace rato. Para llegarse hasta allí no hace falta ser un académico, cualquiera puede entrar, salir y sentir el olor a libro viejo y el silencio de sus salas que son un lujo que tenemos muy cerca. Es de esos sitios que te llenan el alma y te recuerdan que, aunque el mundo se mueva a la velocidad de la luz, un buen libro sigue siendo un tesoro.

If there's one place in this capital that exudes culture from every corner, it's the José Martí National Library of Cuba. And what better name than that of our apostle, our National Hero. The Library is a place I know well and find very familiar, as I've visited it many times—first out of curiosity, then out of necessity, and finally by invitation to various cultural events. Today I walked past it and couldn't help but take several photos, one of which I'm now sharing with you.
This is not just an imposing building facing Revolution Square; it's the home of everyone who has ever searched for a story between pages, a lost piece of information, or simply a moment of peace. This massive structure is not a cold monument; it's a giant with a soul. A silence, almost sepulchral, reigns there. It used to be very popular, but the rise of digital technology has reduced visitor numbers.
This institution is the country's main public library. Here, not only books are kept, but also a documentary, artistic, and sound heritage of incalculable value is protected. Stepping into its reading rooms is like traveling through time. It has collections that captivate anyone. There's the "Wifredo Lam" Art Room, with a collection of Cuban posters that reads like a graphic chronicle of history, along with an impressive number of catalogs and slides. Additionally, manuscripts, engravings, and literary treasures from the 18th to the 19th centuries are safeguarded here. It's a paradise for any researcher or curious soul who truly wants to understand where we come from.
And the best part is that, although it seems like a refuge for scholars, the National Library belongs to those who wish to use it. Its large glass windows provide a blessed coolness—I know this from the times I had to attend literature and cultural promotion courses there. Access is free, public, and open to all. It has a circulating collection room and a children's and young adult room that is wonderful for sparking a love of reading in the little ones. Moreover, it has kept up with the times, offering digital services and a website to access documents that are difficult to find in print. They even have a media library for those who prefer digital formats.
The life of this library has been livelier than a Rio de Janeiro carnival. It was previously located in other parts of the city, but it wasn't until 1958 that it settled into its majestic current building, and in 2021 it was declared a National Monument—as it should have been long ago. You don't need to be an academic to go there; anyone can enter, leave, and soak in the smell of old books and the silence of its rooms, which are a luxury we have close at hand. It's one of those places that fills your soul and reminds you that, even though the world moves at the speed of light, a good book remains a treasure.
