El Onelio, la fábrica de cuenteros y novelistas/Onelio: The Factory of Storytellers and Novelists (Esp-Eng)

Onelio: The Factory of Storytellers and Novelists

Hello, my friends. What a pleasure to greet you once again.

At the intersection of 20th Street and 5th Avenue in Miramar, Havana—where the sea breeze slips between the buildings—there stands a house that is a quarry of writers. I'm talking about the Onelio Jorge Cardoso Literary Training Center, a place dedicated to seeking out young (and not-so-young) talent to teach them the craft of storytelling, and which bears the name of our greatest storyteller, the one who wrote "The Coral Horse."

This is no ordinary school. It is an institution of the Ministry of Culture that got off the ground thanks to the efforts of Eduardo Heras León, Ivonne Galeano, and Francisco López Sacha, and over the years has become a benchmark for the most current Cuban narrative. Many students from across the island have passed through its classrooms—from Havana kids to folks from small towns like Jobabo or Cacocum—all with the dream of learning to write well. And it's not just theory; here they give a thorough review of the greats: Poe, Chekhov, Faulkner, Borges, Cortázar, and even Gabo himself, so that students can see how the masters work.

Every year, the Onelio Center puts out a call for its annual narrative techniques course. The selection process is serious: you have to send three short stories or a novel excerpt, along with a letter explaining why you want to enroll. And mind you, AI-generated texts are not accepted here—this is pure human pulse. For Havana residents, classes are on Saturday mornings. For those from other provinces, the course is hybrid, and later they gather for a ten-day in-person meeting. That said, if you don't turn in your exercises, you're out—this is for those who put their heart into it. I remember when I submitted my three stories and was lucky enough to be selected.

But Onelio is more than just a course. It's a factory of dreams. They have their own publishing house, Ediciones Cajachina, and they publish the magazine El Cuentero (The Storyteller), where the best of new national and international narrative ends up. They also organize the famous International Microfiction Contest "El Dinosaurio," in honor of that story by Monterroso that everyone knows.

For many, myself included, being there feels like finding a family. I've heard graduates say that Onelio is a "refuge," an "opportunity," or even a "journey." And it's no wonder. Here they don't just shape better writers; they forge bonds that last a lifetime. The level is so high that in some contests, graduates from here make up over 80 percent of the winners. The Onelio teachers are spectacular—good people who teach with passion. I was there for a year, going Saturday after Saturday, and I remember I only missed one session because the day before was my birthday and I woke up hungover. If you live in Cuba and love to write and the itch of literature has bitten you, Onelio awaits you at 5th and 20th.
