The chess world’s crossover into esports continues as GM Anish Giri becomes the latest grandmaster to sign with a major gaming organization—joining Team Secret ahead of the star-studded 2025 Esports World Cup. The $1.5 million Riyadh event, featuring chess for the first time, has sparked a signing frenzy, with Giri now the 15th top player to join an esports team.
Known for his sharp wit and elite gameplay, Giri brings both world-class skill and viral charm to Team Secret, a powerhouse in games like Dota 2 and Valorant. The partnership, announced Wednesday, also ties into his work with Anichess, a fantasy chess platform. Team Secret’s CEO, John Yao, praised Giri as "a brilliant competitor and a hilarious, winning personality"—a nod to the Dutch GM’s social media fame and million-strong following.
At 30, Giri—once ranked world No. 3—remains a formidable force, though he’s currently 18th. His signing follows high-profile moves by rivals like Magnus Carlsen (Team Liquid), Hikaru Nakamura (Team Falcons), and Alireza Firouzja (Team Falcons). With chess now part of the Esports World Cup (July 31–August 3), teams are scrambling to recruit elite players.
Giri’s quest for one of 12 qualifying spots is underway: he advanced in the Chessable Masters and sits ninth in the Champions Chess Tour standings. The second leg (May 18–23) could seal his ticket—and more signings are likely on the horizon.
