Charity Or Performance?

In a world filled with suffering, where hunger and thirst still plagued so many countries, it warms my heart to see humans being truly human. It pleases my heart when I see people show kindness, share what they have, and help others in little ways without expecting anything in return. Acts like these remind me that there is still hope for humanity. They remind me that despite the fact that countries are waging wars against each other, there are still good people out there doing good things. And if anything, these things go a long way. One of the reasons why Cristiano Ronaldo is my role model is because he goes the extra mile to help people. He constantly makes donations to orphanage homes. He has donated food, water and other resources to countries suffering the aftermath of war.

I love and respect people who do charity work. They are changing the world one step at a time. However, in today's world, it seems people care more about appearing good than actually doing good. This brings me to today’s Hive Learners’ prompt. The title is: A Little Charity. People constantly donate to charity organizations and orphanage homes. But, how do we know that the money they donate is being used for what it was donated for?

People do charitable deeds for views. I don’t think I have a problem with this, as they actually help people. I mean, some of them genuinely care about doing good, but they are also using it to grow their pages. As long as they do it, and help people, then that’s fine. At least they are doing something that many people would not do in years. While I do not have an issue with people like this, I totally loathe people who use charity funds for their own selfish interests.

A few weeks ago, I came across a video of a teenager who abused innocent young girls. According to reports, the boy is the son of an orphanage home owner. Celebrities and philanthropists constantly donate food and clothes for the children. But then, not only are they maltreated and not well fed, they were also constantly abused by the woman’s son. From the look of things, it was evident that the kids are not well taken care of. They look scrawny, tiny, and unkempt. Their clothes are tattered and their body, filled with scars, probably inflicted by the perpetrator.

I find this really disturbing. People constantly donate bags of rice, beans, and other foodstuff, yet the children look hungry like they haven’t eaten for days. Cases like this need to be well dealt with so others can learn. Now, to answer the question, how can we know that the money donated is being used for its true purpose? In my opinion, it comes down to philanthropists, celebrities or organizations to check in on charity homes after doing their good deeds. The usual thing people do when they visit orphanage homes is to go there with gifts and then they forget all about them, thinking that the one in charge of the orphaned homes would do the needful- use the gifts for the children’s benefits.

But we cannot be sure about this except if we check in on them weeks or months later. For example, if you give an orphanage clothes, after a few weeks, you can go back to check if the children are still wearing the same clothes you met them in. If that is the case, then you proceed to file a report. If not, then you can be rest assured that the person in charge of the orphanage is doing a good job.

I love engaging in charity activities. I remember the time @sayee came up with an initiative to donate to help people. I participated in that and I was happy I did.

Thanks for reading.
