Garden City and its Surrounding [Esp-Eng]

This time I walked through Maracay, and even though it requires taking two buses to get there, it’s a place that’s part of my weekly routine. In other words, some day during the week I’ll have to visit Maracay to run some errands because it’s the most central area and the closest to where I live. This city is known as the “Garden City,” mainly because its surroundings are full of trees and plants, which I really like.

​On my weekly trip to Maracay, I had to run several errands that took me through different parts of the city. The truth is that, on a sunny day—as they usually are here—I stopped at one of those places where the shade of a tree brings me a breath of fresh air, especially at Plaza Bolívar in Maracay. This plaza is very old, and I know that many of the trees there are even older than my parents.

Caminé esta vez por Maracay y, aunque requiere que tome dos autobuses para llegar, es un lugar que forma parte de mi rutina semanal. Es decir, algún día de la semana voy a tener que visitar Maracay para hacer cualquier clase de diligencia porque es la zona más céntrica y cercana a donde vivo. A esta ciudad se le conoce como la "Ciudad Jardín", principalmente porque sus alrededores están llenos de árboles y plantas, lo cual me gusta mucho.

​En mi visita semanal hacia Maracay tuve que hacer varias diligencias que me hicieron pasar por diferentes zonas de la ciudad. La verdad es que, en un día soleado como por lo general son aquí, me detuve en uno de esos lugares en los que la sombra de un árbol me refresca la vida, especialmente en la Plaza Bolívar de Maracay. Esta plaza tiene muchísimos años y sé que muchos de los árboles que hay ahí son incluso mayores que mis padres.

But they’re still there, providing shade, cooling the air, and making this one of my favorite spots to recharge and get back to my activities. The sun was especially strong that day—I guess because it was going to rain that night—so I actually went prepared with my umbrella, and that made the walk, which was quite long, more bearable. One of the things I do in Maracay is visit one of my favorite supermarkets because of its quality and prices, but I came across a nice surprise this time.

A while back, my husband was the one who went grocery shopping at this supermarket because I hadn’t had time, so I hadn’t been there for several weeks. To my surprise, when I went this time, I saw something really cute on a tree—or rather, on a tree trunk that’s been there for many years as well. On this trunk, they’d painted several drawings of iconic landmarks in Maracay, as well as one of the animals most commonly found in the area: the rabipelados.

Pero siguen ahí, dando sombra, refrescando el ambiente y convirtiéndose en una de mis paradas favoritas para poder recargar energías y seguir con mis actividades. Este día el sol estaba especialmente fuerte, supongo que porque por la noche iba a llover, así que la verdad me fui preparada con mi sombrilla y eso hizo más llevadera la caminata, que fue bastante larga. Una de las cosas que hago en Maracay es visitar uno de los supermercados que más me gusta por su calidad y sus precios, pero me conseguí con una linda sorpresa esta vez.

​Hace algún tiempo era mi esposo quien iba a hacer las compras a este supermercado porque yo no había tenido tiempo, así que tenía varias semanas sin visitar el lugar. Para mi sorpresa, esta vez que fui vi algo súper lindo en un árbol, o más bien en un tronco de árbol que lleva ahí muchos años también. En este tronco hicieron varios dibujos de lugares emblemáticos de Maracay y también de uno de los animalitos que más visitan la zona: los rabipelados.

In the distance, I could see the colors—which, by the way, were very vibrant—and I couldn’t help but walk closer to get a better look at the drawings they’d made, because the truth is, I love art in all its forms. To me, this is a really lovely way to capture the essence of this part of Maracay, and I have to admit that, at least for me, that’s what stands out the most right now: this painted log featuring the Sindoni Tower, the Redoma del Avión, the Plaza de Toros, and those cute little bald-headed figures.

I feel like this is one of those things I won’t be able to help but notice every time I pass by, and in fact, I’ll consciously look for a way to see it. For me, this is one of the best things about walking—because while you might see things like this from a distance on a bus or in a car, when you walk, you can really take them in, feel them, and observe them up close. My husband and I really enjoy walking, and although it’s sometimes uncomfortable because of the weather, the truth is that we always come away with wonderful memories from walks like these.

​A lo lejos veía los colores, que de paso eran muy vibrantes, y no pude evitar acercarme para ver de cerca los dibujos que habían hecho, porque la verdad es que me encanta el arte en todas sus presentaciones. Esto para mí es una forma muy linda de caracterizar esta zona de Maracay y debo admitir que, al menos para mí, eso es lo que más resalta ahora: este tronco pintado que contiene la Torre Sindoni, la Redoma del Avión, la Plaza de Toros y esos lindos rabipelados.

​Siento que esta es una de esas cosas que no podré evitar ver cada vez que pase por ahí, y de hecho buscaré conscientemente la manera de poder verlo. Para mí esta es una de las cosas más lindas de poder caminar, porque si bien desde un autobús o un carro podrías ver cosas como estas a lo lejos, cuando caminas puedes palparlas, sentirlas y observarlas muy de cerca. En el caso de mi esposo y yo, nos gusta bastante caminar y, aunque a veces es incómodo por el clima, la verdad es que siempre sacamos experiencias bonitas de caminatas como estas.
