Un año lejos de casa… y el valor de celebrar juntos

Hay preguntas que nos invitan a imaginar escenarios que quizás nunca vivamos, pero que aun así nos ayudan a descubrir qué es lo que realmente valoramos.
Si tuvieras la oportunidad de vivir un año de intercambio siendo adulta, ¿dónde te gustaría vivir y qué harías?
Aunque los programas de intercambio suelen asociarse con la etapa estudiantil, creo que aprender de otras culturas no tiene edad.
Si tuviera la oportunidad de vivir una experiencia de intercambio durante un año, me gustaría hacerlo en Canadá.
No porque piense que sea un lugar perfecto, sino porque me parece un país donde conviven personas de orígenes muy diversos y donde podría aprender mucho tanto a nivel profesional como humano.
Como médica, me resultaría muy interesante conocer otra forma de trabajar dentro del sistema de salud, observar cómo se organizan los servicios, cómo se relacionan los profesionales con los pacientes y qué soluciones han encontrado para desafíos que son comunes en muchas partes del mundo.
Pero más allá de lo profesional, creo que lo que más me atraería sería la posibilidad de convivir con personas diferentes.
Me gustaría descubrir cómo son sus rutinas, qué tradiciones conservan, qué cosas consideran importantes y cuáles son sus preocupaciones cotidianas.
Con frecuencia pensamos que las diferencias culturales son enormes, pero mientras más escuchamos las historias de otras personas, más descubrimos que compartimos muchas de las mismas esperanzas, miedos y sueños.
Imagino a mi familia anfitriona como una familia sencilla, abierta al diálogo y curiosa sobre el mundo. De esas personas que disfrutan sentarse a conversar durante la cena y compartir experiencias del día.
Creo que una experiencia así no solo serviría para conocer otro país, sino también para regresar con una comprensión más amplia de la condición humana.
¿Te gusta celebrar tu propio cumpleaños?
Sí, me gusta celebrar mi cumpleaños.
Pero debo admitir que la razón ha cambiado con los años.
Cuando era más joven, probablemente esperaba la fecha con ilusión por los regalos, las sorpresas o la emoción propia de cumplir años.
Hoy lo veo de una manera diferente.
Lo que más disfruto es la posibilidad de reunir a las personas que quiero.
La vida adulta suele llevarnos por caminos distintos. El trabajo, las responsabilidades y los compromisos hacen que muchas veces no podamos compartir tanto tiempo con familiares y amigos como nos gustaría.
Por eso me gusta cuando mi cumpleaños se convierte en una oportunidad para sentarnos juntos, conversar, reír y crear nuevos recuerdos.
No necesito una gran celebración.
Una comida en familia, una conversación sincera o incluso una llamada de alguien importante pueden hacer que el día tenga un significado especial.
Al mismo tiempo, también pienso que las muestras de cariño no deberían depender únicamente de fechas señaladas.
Sería hermoso que encontráramos más oportunidades durante el año para decirle a las personas que las apreciamos, para visitarlas o simplemente para compartir tiempo con ellas.
Aun así, mientras existan los cumpleaños, seguiré viéndolos como una hermosa excusa para celebrar la vida y agradecer la compañía de quienes forman parte de ella.
Estas preguntas me recordaron algo importante: conocer nuevos lugares puede enriquecer nuestra vida, pero son las personas con las que compartimos el camino las que terminan dando verdadero significado a la experiencia.

Some questions invite us to imagine situations we may never experience, yet they still help us discover what we truly value.
If you had the opportunity to spend a year abroad as an adult, where would you like to live and what would you do?
Although exchange programs are usually associated with student life, I believe that learning from other cultures has no age limit.
If I had the opportunity to spend a year in an exchange experience, I would choose Canada.
Not because I think it is a perfect place, but because it seems to be a country where people from many different backgrounds live together, and where I could learn a great deal both professionally and personally.
As a physician, I would be very interested in learning about another healthcare system, observing how services are organized, how professionals interact with patients, and what solutions they have found for challenges that are common in many parts of the world.
But beyond the professional aspect, I think what would attract me most would be the opportunity to live alongside people who have different experiences and perspectives.
I would love to discover their routines, traditions, values, and everyday concerns.
We often think cultural differences are enormous, but the more we listen to other people's stories, the more we realize how many hopes, fears, and dreams we share.
I imagine my host family as a warm and open-minded family, people who enjoy conversation and are genuinely interested in learning about others.
I believe such an experience would not only allow me to discover another country but also return home with a broader understanding of human nature.
Do you enjoy celebrating your own birthday?
Yes, I do enjoy celebrating my birthday.
But I must admit that the reason has changed over the years.
When I was younger, I probably looked forward to birthdays because of gifts, surprises, and the excitement that comes with growing older.
Today, I see them differently.
What I enjoy most is the opportunity to gather the people I love.
Adult life often takes us in different directions. Work, responsibilities, and commitments mean that we cannot always spend as much time with family and friends as we would like.
That is why I appreciate it when my birthday becomes an opportunity to sit together, talk, laugh, and create new memories.
I do not need a large celebration.
A family meal, a heartfelt conversation, or even a phone call from someone important can make the day feel special.
At the same time, I also believe that expressions of affection should not depend solely on special dates.
It would be wonderful if we found more opportunities throughout the year to tell people we care about them, visit them, or simply spend time together.
Even so, as long as birthdays exist, I will continue to see them as a beautiful excuse to celebrate life and appreciate the people who are part of it.
These questions reminded me of something important: discovering new places can enrich our lives, but it is the people we share the journey with who ultimately give meaning to the experience.
