Hansi Flick's priority in his sporting planning is to retain the bulk of his current squad. And, little by little, he's achieving this. The latest player to extend his contract is Frenkie de Jong. The 28-year-old former Ajax player was one of the players whose contract expired in June 2026, so the Catalan club was in a hurry to finalize the negotiations. Barcelona, in fact, submitted an offer many months ago. The talks have been as long as they have been difficult, as positions and relationships remained distant. Above all, the midfielder was somewhat upset by the criticism he received from the Barça fans following the leak of his salary, which was high because he had deferred it a few seasons ago to help Barça through a difficult financial period.
But those differences were put behind him a few weeks ago, as contacts intensified and a compromise was reached. In fact, since the tour of Asia, the midfielder had been assuring in every appearance that his intention was to reach an agreement with the club and that he was convinced it would be reached. Today, it's a reality, pending the official announcement.
Frenkie de Jong, who joined Barcelona in July 2019 from Ajax, is once again feeling important to the team. He regained his prominence in the second half of last season, having overcome his ankle injury. He is an undisputed starter in Flick's Barça midfield, playing a key role in the double pivot alongside Pedri. This new role in the starting lineup served as an impetus for his renewal. The Barça fans also replaced their whistles, from previous seasons, with applause.
The international midfielder, one of the captains of the Barcelona dressing room, has made eight appearances this season. In total, he has now appeared in 267 matches for the Blaugrana.
