Museum Monday 1400 year old ship.

in Liketu9 days ago

Hello weekend lovers,

I went to see a ship that was found in the city of Utrecht in the year 1930.
During excavation works in the city they discovered this 1400 year old, 17.8 meters (58 ft) long ship.

It was an old cargo ship that sailed across the rivers in the Netherlands to bring all kinds of goods trough out the Netherlands.

The estimate that the ship was build between the year 997 and 1030. They used a local oak tree and because of the growth rings they could estimate the date so accurate.

The ship is 3.8 m (12 ft) wide and had a draft of 0.7 meters (2.3 ft) That means I could go on to a lot of smaller rivers that were not that deep.

They estimated that the ship could carry 13 tons of goods.

This is part of the bottom of the ship. Couldn't get a better picture because of the glass wall that is around the ship. Protecting it from people tough it.

It stands in the basement of the central museum in Utrecht. It's pretty smelly in there because of the preservation chemicals (formaldehyde). Its also pretty dark and not that big of a space, so taking pictures of it was a bit difficult.

This is an interesting museum, though I am not sure if I would be able to stand the smell. ><

It was doable, there was just the ship so you are done quickly 😅

Impressive ship!

It is really impressive to see it. The history is so cool

Yes, I remember the smell very well!

Haha you have been there or did you work with formaldehyde?

Born in Utrecht, visited the museum as a kid.
And many times later.
Haha, the smell of the ship is grounded in my memory!

Haga nice 😅 I am glad I could bring back some of your memories

So interesting!

I love this kind of history

Amazing it lasted that good for all those years!

It was preserved by a layer of clay.
