En este lado del mundo llamado sudamérica existe una gran variedad de frutas exóticas, muchas solamente las llegamos a conocer si viajamos hasta ciertas partes del continente o de nuestros propios países, y otras, tenemos la oportunidad de encontrarlas en los supermercados o mercados populares gracias a personas que deciden traerlas desde esos lugares apartados hasta aquí, o cultivarlas en zonas más cercanas a las ciudades, este es el caso de la fruta que les presento hoy.

Hello hivers. On this side of the world called South America, there is a wide variety of exotic fruits. Many of them we only get to know if we travel to certain parts of the continent or our own countries. Others, we have the opportunity to find in supermarkets or popular markets thanks to people who choose to bring them from those remote places here, or grow them in areas closer to cities. This is the case of the fruit I'm presenting to you today.

Un día fuí al supermercado que está cerca de mi casa y en el área de las frutas ví esta extraña fruta que nunca antes había visto, la agarré y decía, Pera Melón, el nombre tampoco me sonaba familiar así que como no era muy cara me llevé dos que ya venían en una bandeja empaquetadas, para así probarla. Cuando estaba en la caja pagando, la cajera me preguntó qué sabor tenía esa fruta y si era sabrosa, y le respondí que no tenía ni la más mínima idea jajaja, y que por eso justamente la estaba comprando, para probarla.

One day I went to the supermarket near my house and in the fruit section I saw this strange fruit that I had never seen before, I picked it up and it said, Melon Pear, the name didn't sound familiar to me either so since it wasn't very expensive I took two that came already packaged in a tray, to try it. When I was at the checkout paying, the cashier asked me what flavor that fruit had and if it was tasty, and I replied that I hadn't the slightest idea hahaha, and that was precisely why I was buying it, to try it.

En mi casa tampoco nadie la conocía así que decidí investigar un poquito para conocerla antes de probarla, estaban duras y no parecían estar listas aún para comerse así que las dejé varios días para que maduraran. En Venezuela esta fruta se cultiva mayormente en la región de los Andes, en los estados Táchira y Mérida, pero también en La Colonia Tovar, un sector agricola de aquí del estado Aragua muy cercano a mi ciudad que está en la montaña y que tiene un clima frío, seguramente estas frutas las traen de ahí.

No one at home knew it either, so I decided to do a little research before trying it. They were hard and didn't seem ready to eat yet, so I left them for several days to ripen. In Venezuela, this fruit is grown mostly in the Andes region, in the states of Táchira and Mérida, but also in La Colonia Tovar, an agricultural sector here in the state of Aragua very close to my city, which is in the mountains and has a cold climate. These fruits are probably imported from there.

La pera melón (Solanum muricatum), conocida también como melón de árbol, pepino melón, pepino dulce, cachán, cachuma, es originaria de los Andes, principalmente Perú, Bolivia, Chile y Ecuador. La planta pertenece a la familia de las solanáceas y es un arbusto que puede llegar a alcanzar los dos metros de altura, como es un arbusto, esto significa que la pera melón no es una fruta como tal sino una baya, aunque todas las bayas son frutas, pero ese es otro tema jajaja.

The melon pear (Solanum muricatum), also known as tree melon, melon cucumber, sweet cucumber, cachán, and cachuma, is native to the Andes, mainly in Peru, Bolivia, Chile, and Ecuador. The plant belongs to the Solanaceae family and is a bush that can reach up to two meters in height. As it's a bush, this means that the melon pear is not a fruit as such but a berry, although all berries are fruits, but that's another topic, hahaha.

Esta fruta tiene una gran cantidad de agua, lo que la hace muy refrescante y baja en calorías, también es rica en vitamina A, C, potasio y carbohidratos. En cuanto a sus propiedades y beneficios para nuestra salud, la pera melón o pepino dulce, ayuda a reducir el colesterol, los niveles de azúcar en la sangre, prevenir el cáncer de colon, las enfermedades cardíacas, reducir las probabilidades de desarrollar cálculos renales, es excelentes para la salud de los ojos ya que por su alto contenido de vitamina A ayuda a prevenir el envejecimiento ocular, fortalece el sistema inmunológico y también, contribuye a tener un sueño reparador. En pocas palabras, toda una maravilla 😀.

This fruit has a high water content, making it very refreshing and low in calories. It's also rich in vitamins A, C, potassium, and carbohydrates. Las semillas son pequeñas y suaves como las del pepino / The seeds are small and soft like those of a cucumber

Ya había pasado una semana desde que las compré así que corté una para probarla. Al abrirla, adentro era igual a un melón, lisa y con una hendidura en el centro, aunque a diferencia del melón, su concha es suave y delgada, creo que aún no estaba lista para comer, se veía algo pálida 😕🙈, pero ni modo jajaja. De todas maneras la corté en rebanadas y la probamos. A pesar de ser conocida como pera melón y pepino dulce, esta baya o fruta no es familia ni del melón, ni de la pera ni del pepino 🤷🏻‍♀️.

It had been a week since I bought them so I cut one open to try it. When I opened it, the inside was just like a melon, smooth and with a groove in the center, although unlike a melon, its shell is soft and thin. I don't think it was ready to eat yet, it looked a bit pale 😕🙈, but whatever hahaha. Anyway, I cut it into slices and we tried it. Despite being known as melon pear and sweet cucumber, this berry or fruit is not related to the melon, the pear, or the cucumber 🤷🏻‍♀️.

Cuando la probé, ciertamente noté que aún le faltaba madurar pero igual me la comí 🤷🏻‍♀️, ahora bien, su sabor me hizo recordar al Chavo del 8 y sus aguas frescas 😂🤣🤣 (El Chavo del 8 es una serie de tv cómica mexicana (1973-1980), una de las más vistas y difundidas en los países de había hispana, y aún vigente entre el público de todas las edades, no hay niño, adolescente ni adulto de habla hispana que no haya visto El Chavo del 8 😁). Lo siento pero esto solamente lo entendemos en Latinoamérica 😅😎🤷🏻‍♀️. ¿Se acuerdan de los capítulos donde El Chavo vendía aguas frescas? ¿Recuerdan cuáles eran los sabores? Estaba la de limón que parecía de Jamaica y sabía a tamarindo, la de tamarindo que parecía de limón y sabía a Jamaica y la de Jamaica que parecía de tamarindo y sabía a limón 🥴😂🤣, bueno, esta fruta es así, es una pera, parece un melón y sabe a pepino 😂🤣.

When I tried it, I certainly noticed that it still needed to ripen but I ate it anyway 🤷🏻‍♀️, now its flavor reminded me of El Chavo del 8 and his fresh waters 😂🤣🤣 (El Chavo del 8 is a Mexican comedy TV series (1973-1980), one of the most watched and broadcast in Spanish-speaking countries, and still current among audiences of all ages, there is no Spanish-speaking child, teenager, or adult who hasn't seen El Chavo del 8 😁). I'm sorry but we only understand this in Latin America 😅😎🤷🏻‍♀️. Do you remember the episodes where El Chavo sold fresh waters? Do you remember what the flavors were? There was the lemon one that looked like Jamaica and tasted like tamarind, the tamarind one that looked like lemon and tasted like Jamaica, and the Jamaica one that looked like tamarind and tasted like lemon 🥴😂🤣, well, this fruit is like this, it's a pear, it looks like a melon, and it tastes like cucumber 😂🤣.

Sabe a pepino, no estaba muy dulce pero su sabor era agradable, supongo que cuando la cortas un poquito más madura debe ser más dulce / It tastes like cucumber, it wasn't very sweet but its flavor was pleasant, I suppose that when you cut it a little more ripe it should be sweeter

Según lo que leí, cuando la pera melón está madura tiene un color amarillo dorado y su sabor es bastante dulce 🙈🥴😬, lo que significa que la corté antes de tiempo, sin embargo, también leí que hay varias especies y no todas se tornan doradas al estar maduras, el mejor indicativo es que la fruta este un poquito suave al hacer presión sobre ella.

According to what I read, when the melon pear is ripe it has a golden yellow color and its flavor is quite sweet 🙈🥴😬, which means that I cut it early, however, I also read that there are several species and not all of them turn golden when they are ripe, the best indicator is that the fruit is a little soft when you press on it.

La pera melón o pepino dulce no resiste largos viajes de traslado a otros países y es por eso que gracias a la popularidad que ha adquirido como súper alimento y por sus beneficios, países como España, Nueva Zelanda, Marruecos y Kenia, así como también en centro américa, han empezado a cultivarla para aprovechar todos esos beneficios que ofrece para la salud.

The melon pear or sweet cucumber cannot withstand long transport trips to other countries, and that's why, thanks to its popularity as a superfood and for its benefits, countries such as Spain, New Zealand, Morocco and Kenya, as well as Central America, have begun to cultivate it to take advantage of all the health benefits it offers.
