There was never a time that God departed from us. If we are feel distant from God then it is as a result of our actions.
James 4:8
Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded.
Our closeness or farness from God is all dependent on us. If we want to be closer to God then we have to draw close to Him. But if we want to be far from Him then we do the opposite; which is to distant ourselves from Him.
God will never force Himself on us. All our dealings with Him has to be intentionally and from our hearts. That was why He gave each and every one of us freewill. Our lives are sum up of the choices we make.
If we want to feel close to God then we must do everything that causes His presence to remain with us, and those are the things that give Him glory. But when we begin to do the things that displeases we set up a boundary between us and God
