While we visited a local nature reserve, we witnessed a young herring gull hovering over the water before diving in to try and catch some food.
When a young gull hovers over the water, it’s using its keen eyesight to spot fish or other small creatures below the surface.
Once the gull has spotted its prey, it will dive quickly into the water. Herring gulls tend to eat whatever is available, including fish, crustaceans, and even human food.
As their diet is somewhat variable, they can live in various places, including urban and coastal areas. Depending on your viewpoint, gulls in coastal areas, where they scavenge near beaches and piers, can be considered a nuisance, as many will dive-bomb people for food, especially ice cream! I quite like them, though. Everything has to eat.
