Yesterday I was sweeping the yard and noticed some mushrooms I had photographed during the week starting to degrade.
Ayer estaba barriendo el patio y noté unas setas que había fotografiado durante la semana comenzando a degradarse.
I also found a piece of log with dark formations that made it look like it had been burned.
También encontré un trozo de tronco con unas formaciones oscuras que hacían parecer que se había quemado.
On the other side of the same trunk were other lighter, looser ones. I mistook them for hairy mushrooms, but when I got closer, I saw they were something else.
Del otro lado del mismo tronco había otros más claros y sueltos. Los confundí con hongos peludos pero, al acercarme, vi que eran algo diferente.
They are slime molds of the genus Stemonitis.
Son mohos mucilaginosos del género Stemonitis.
They do not belong to the fungi kingdom but to the protista kingdom, however they were previously considered fungi.
No pertenecen al reino fungi pero si al protista, sin embargo antes eran considerados hongos.
Slime molds were perhaps thought to belong to the fungi kingdom because they are so closely related. They form fruiting bodies with sporangia and feed on them at some stages of their life cycle.
Quizá se creía que los mohos mucilaginosos pertenecían al reino fungi porque están muy relacionados. Forman cuerpos fructíferos con esporangios y se alimentan de ellos en algunas etapas de su ciclo vital.
These elongated formations are very soft.
Esas formaciones alargadas son muy suaves.
Each one is approximately 2 centimeters long and 1 millimeter in diameter, with a base or foot less than 1 millimeter wide.
Cada una de ellas tiene aproximadamente 2 centímetros de largo y 1 milímetro de diámetro, además de una base o pie de menos de 1 milímetro de ancho.
When touched they release spores.
Cuando son tocadas liberan esporas.
