They lied about everything. The wealthy family that needed a nanny for their two young children did not exist. She spent barely any time at all in the first country she flew to before she was taken to a place where she didn't speak the language and was forced into a life she never would have chosen.
She survived that hell for years, far longer than she ever expected. Whatever hope she had ever possessed was so far gone she barely remembered what it had felt like. But every morning her eyes would open and it would all begin again. And it was as she hovered in that state of hopelessness that the rescue took place.
They took her from the monsters. They brought her back home. She was welcomed with love by those who had grieved her but it was as if that love could not reach her. Not yet, maybe never. She found herself staring into her empty eyes in the mirror, looking for her spirit and wondering if she'd lost it for good in that dark, terrible place.
That was not a happy story, but it had a better ending than it could have.
