Goodbye May

It was a pretty busy end to the month of May. I was hoping to maybe sleep in a little bit on Saturday morning, but then we got word that my nephews first baseball game was at 8:00 AM. Given the fact it was an hour and a half away, we had to get up at 5 AM to make it down there in time. That's just not right!

We made it down to Brighton, MI about fifteen minutes before the first game started. It was freaking cold. Like we should have brought our winter coats cold. We had a couple blankets that we tried to wrap around ourselves for warmth, but it didn't do much to stop the wind.

Unfortunately, it continues to be a rough season for my nephews travel baseball team. They were shut out and lost the first game something like 17 to 0. I honestly blame it on the coaching. They made some stupid choices for their position players and I don't feel like the kids are learning the fundamentals that they should be. It ended up being a quick weekend for them with three blowout losses.

The main reason we traveled down to Brighton on this early Saturday morning was because both of our nephews were playing at the same complex. While the one was out playing baseball, the other was inside playing basketball. After the early morning game, we headed indoors to watch a basketball game. We were hoping it would be a little warmer inside, but it was only slightly. @mrsbozz was still freezing.

The Legacy Complex is actually pretty impressive with lots of softball and baseball fields, as well as the indoor sites. I think my biggest issue with the place is that you have to pay separately for each section. We had to pay $10 a piece for the daily pass to watch baseball, then we had to pay another $15 a piece to watch the basketball games for the day.

I don't know about you, but $50 is a lot to spend for entry to a non-professional sporting event.

After the first basketball game it was back outdoors to watch more baseball. Thankfully, the sun had come out by then so it was a touch warmer, but honestly not much! This game went a little better too with my nephews team actually scoring some runs, but they ultimately lost by a rather large margin again.

If you guessed after baseball we headed back in for more basketball, you would be absolutely correct! My youngest nephew is actually quite the basketball player and while he used to also play baseball, he has decided to focus on football and basketball for now. I think he is actually on about three or four different travel teams.

They faced some stiff competition and they ended up losing both of the games we watched by a very slim margin.

After the second game, we turned the car north and headed back to our home area. Unfortunately for them, they still had two more games to sit around for before they got to head home. It was a kind of special day for me on Saturday, so @mrsbozz wanted to take me out to eat. I was in the mood for meatloaf, so we headed to Midland Brewing Company.

I'll be including this post for #beersaturday sponsored by @detlev.

My wife got the Hefeweizen as she really enjoys lighter beers like that. Since it was still a bit chilly, I was drawn more towards the darker beers. I ended up settling on the "Lazy Turtle Maple Sap Brown Ale". Now, you might think give the name it would be an overly sweet beer, but that was actually not the case. Since they use maple sap and not maple syrup, the brew actually had a bit of a hoppy bite that I wasn't expecting.

In fact, in this beer they use 250 gallons of maple sap from Lazy Turtle Ranch. This was actually one of the best brown ales I have had in a while and if you get the chance to stop in to MBC and they still have it on tap, I highly recommend you try it out. I've been telling @cryptictruth he needs to make the drive over and try this place out for a while now.

@mrsbozz and I hadn't eaten a proper meal since breakfast that morning, so we decided to get an appetizer of spicy fried pickles.

As I said, I was in the mood for meatloaf which I know probably sounds funny. Meatloaf isn't generally considered high end cuisine, but it is a comfort food that when done right it just about the best thing in the world. That's my opinion anyway. As usual, it did not disappoint. If you have never heard of meatloaf before, it's basically just ground beef and sometimes pork, then they put veggies and seasonings in it and make it into a loaf. MBC actually smokes their meatloaf versus baking it in an oven which gives it a ton more flavor.

@mrsbozz went with a turkey sandwich thing that she said was quite good. We both had a bit left over, so we took the rest to go and hit a local ice cream place to get some pints before heading home after a long day.

Sunday I got to sleep in a little bit, then I headed over to my parents to spend some time with them before throwing a round of disc golf with my buddy, and then heading home to mow the lawn and finish up the planter box you saw in the opening photo. I have been working on that for some time now and while I am not entirely happy with the way it turned out, my wife seems to really enjoy it.

I think it does the job of blocking the view of the neighbors as well. At least a little.

I finished up the day on Sunday grilling for @mrsbozz and I, and then we spent the evening watching the Women's Softball World Series semifinal games.

Have you ever had a weekend where you finish it more tired than you started?

I feel the same as you, I thought I could just sleep in this weekend, but it turns out there isn't much work to finish that makes me very tired.

It's a never ending cycle I guess.

Wow what a weekend!

I will have to be honest with you in saying I might not make the first game if I had to be up at 5:30 am. So solid of you to dedicate your weekend (and $50 entry!) to supporting the family.

Since I procrastinate big jobs and adventures to the weekend, I am quite often more tired at the end of it than I was at the beginning. I still find it better to be physically tired at the end of these weekends than mentally tired at the end of a work week for the real accomplishment.

A little brewery visit and beer helps put out that fire!

Solid weekend.

Yeah, we had talked about going later, but then it really would have blown the whole day. Driving all that way to watch just two games wasn't really worth it. The brewery was top notch for sure and a great way to end the day.

Hey! The cedar box looks great. I like what you did with the palms. Great privacy screen 👌

Thanks! It doesn't look too bad from a distance. When you get closer you start seeing a lot of the flaws though!

Mine are the same. Just don't inspect them 🧐 when you go outside lol

Definitely adding trying out MBC's smoked Meatloaf the next time I'm up that way! It's very, very hard to find a good smoked meatloaf.

It's pretty rare to find it places these days. It used to be most mom and pop places would have it every Thursday. Many of those places have closed up though.

Sorry to hear about those blowout losses, it sounds like the coaching must be really bad. Fundamentals and positions is everything is baseball. That cold sounds miserable, but this time of year in your part of the country you can get some cold surprises. At least on the way back you got that really good meat loaf and the beer looks awesome. I personally like a really good meat loaf too, you aren't alone on that one.

Too bad it was a rough weekend for the nephews in the sports arena. It happens...

Yeah, they seem to handle it pretty well. It builds character anyway! I need to try my hand at smoking my own meat loaf sometime.

Switching between baseball and basketball must have kept the day fun and full of activity.

It sure did!

Hay amigo, what a Saturday you had and your nephews' teams were defeated, both the baseball and basketball teams. The valuable thing is that it was interestingly cold and there was no choice but to enjoy the trip despite the cost of the tickets to see your nephews in their respective disciplines.

I hope you can relax and get more rest next weekend. All the best.

I hope so too!
