I worry that we're seeing the emergence of a bifurcated global economy. China and the United States are still one another's number one or number two most important trading partners, but bilateral foreign investment has fallen off. The Chinese are investing abroad, but not so much anymore in the United States. US companies are investing abroad, but no longer in China. There are important economies aligned with the United States like South Korea that depend importantly on trade with China and non-aligned countries like India that continue to deal with both economies. I think a bifurcated global economy where economic relations between the US and China broke down and there were more trade restrictions and retaliation and bilateral financial flows dried up entirely would be disastrous for the global economy.
