Hello amazing Ladies of Hive
I hope you’re all doing well and staying strong. It feels good to join this week’s prompt because the topic really touched a soft spot in my heart.
There’s something I own that might not look like much to others, but to me, it means everything. It’s a wrapper simple, yes, but full of memory, love, and deep meaning
This wrapper belonged to my late grandmother. She wore it often to pray, to cook, or even just to relax in the compound with her feet up, telling stories. As a child, I used to sit close to her, play with the edge of the wrapper, and listen to her voice. That wrapper wasn’t just clothing to her, it was part of her daily life.
When she passed away, I didn’t ask for anything big. I only wanted that wrapper. It was my way of holding onto her spirit. Every time I touch it, I feel close to her. It gives me peace, like she’s still here, still protecting me.
And just recently, I tied that same wrapper not just as a skirt, but also as a gele. I wore it for a photo, and in that moment, I didn’t just feel beautiful… I felt proud. Proud of the woman who raised us, proud to carry her memory on my head and around my waist.
📸 (The photo I’ve attached to this post is from that day. I’m wearing my grandmother’s wrapper both as a skirt and a gele. As you can see, it’s still neat and strong, just like she was.)
To some people, it may just look like a regular piece of cloth. But to me, it’s a reminder of where I come from. It represents strength, womanhood, and family love. I’ve had offers from people who want to buy me newer, fancier wrappers. But none of them can replace this one. This wrapper carries history. It .
Thank you for reading my little story. I believe that sometimes, the things that look small to others are the ones that carry our biggest emotions. If you have something like that too, something ordinary but special, hold onto it. That’s your own treasure.
Much love to every strong woman here💛🧡💛
Let’s continue to carry our stories with pride.
