The numbers do not add up

Well, this week's image is very significant, so let's talk about economics. And who is better prepared to talk about that than the average Venezuelan, the one who struggles every day to put bread on the table?

Taken from the initiative, courtesy of @lanzjoseg.

You don't need a PhD to understand what life is like in Venezuela on a daily basis. Every morning, when you look at the figures published on the BCV website, you are struck by the economic instability that exists there. Yes, if we average the daily increase at 1 Bs./$ the rate of increase, I can estimate that by December the value of the dollar will be around 270 Bs. I don't understand, then, why the regime is trumpeting that the Venezuelan economy grew by 8% in the first half of 2025.

My brother Henry tells me that merchants are not satisfied with the daily increase in the BCV rate, but use the value of the euro as the rate for transactions and, on top of that, also increase the cost of items in dollars. I wonder, then, what magic my fellow Venezuelans use to survive the daily uncertainty of rising food prices… What would life be like, for example, for my brother if I did not send him a fortnightly remittance… A hug full of blessings for all my Venezuelan brothers and sisters.

Sort:

A very touching article about the economic conditions in Venezuela. The difference between the government's official data, which says the economy is growing at 8%, and the daily reality experienced by the people is truly ironic.

The projection of the dollar reaching 270 Bs by the end of the year shows how difficult life is there. Moreover, traders use the Euro exchange rate and raise prices in dollars - a double burden for the people.

What's most touching is your concern for your brother Henry and his family in Venezuela. The regular money you send must be helping them survive.

Hopefully, the economic situation there will improve soon. Stay strong, brothers and sisters of Venezuela!

Thank you for sharing this honest and personal perspective.
