Nuevamente me congelo frente a la pantalla y, por un instante, me sumerjo en mis recuerdos... En esta latitud donde ahora vivo, la abundancia se presenta con normalidad y observo la imagen que nos comparte @lanzjoseg y más allá de ver simple mercancía; veo un batallón de centinelas que custodian la frontera entre la madurez y ese reino sagrado que llamamos infancia.

El Santuario de los Sueños de Algodón

Para quienes hemos cruzado océanos y fronteras, dejando atrás una tierra de contrastes feroces, de carencias y de una cultura que se aferra a la fe para sobrevivir al caos, estas estanterías repletas tienen un significado distinto, lo percibo. Aquí, en este mundo de vitrinas siempre llenas, el peluche parece un objeto cotidiano. Allá, en mi memoria, un juguete de este tipo era a menudo un milagro, un trozo de suavidad que servía de escudo contra una realidad que a veces golpeaba demasiado fuerte. En mi época de infancia, un niño no tenía un peluche, eso contradecía el machismo imperante. Hoy, es sencillamente algo tan común ver a niños y niñas con peluches o ropas de colores...

Mis ojos se clavan inevitablemente en las figuras de Hello Kitty. Ese rostro blanco y sereno me arrastra con una fuerza centrípeta hacia el año 2007. Recuerdo a mi hija Sofía, con sus ocho años recién cumplidos, señalando con una emoción tal incontrolable una figura idéntica a las que hoy veo ahí apiladas. En aquel entonces, conseguirle ese pequeño tesoro era mucho más que una transacción comercial; era construirle un refugio de ternura en medio de las vicisitudes que nos rodeaban en nuestro país. Sofía ya no está para pedirme más peluches, pero su recuerdo vive en cada costura de estas criaturas de felpa. Ella me enseñó que el mundo de un niño no sabe de crisis económicas ni de desequilibrios sociales; solo sabe de asombro.

Creo que @lanzjoseg nos invita a eso, no es una foto para el mercado; es un caleidoscopio para no perdernos. Nos recuerda que, sin importar cuán lejos hayamos llegado o cuán estructurada sea nuestra nueva vida, todos llevamos dentro ese rincón donde un gato con sombrero o un oso de ojos redondos es capaz de detener el tiempo. Somos lo que recordamos, y en ese estante, entre colores pastel y texturas de seda, está guardada la inocencia que nos permite seguir siendo humanos, a pesar de las distancias y de las ausencias..., de la diferencia cultural.

Once again, I find myself transfixed in front of the screen and, for a moment, I am lost in my memories… In this part of the world where I now live, abundance is the norm, and as I look at the image shared by @lanzjoseg, beyond seeing mere merchandise, I see a battalion of sentinels guarding the border between adulthood and that sacred realm we call childhood.

The Shrine of Cotton Dreams

For those of us who have crossed oceans and borders, leaving behind a land of fierce contrasts, of deprivation and of a culture that clings to faith to survive the chaos, these overflowing shelves have a different meaning; I can sense it. Here, in this world of ever-full display cabinets, the soft toy seems like an everyday object. Back then, in my memory, a toy of this kind was often a miracle, a piece of softness that served as a shield against a reality that sometimes struck too hard. In my childhood, a boy didn’t have a soft toy; that went against the prevailing machismo. Today, it is simply so common to see boys and girls with soft toys or colourful clothes...

My eyes are inevitably drawn to the Hello Kitty figures. That pale, serene face pulls me with a centripetal force back to the year 2007. I remember my daughter Sofía, having just turned eight, pointing with such uncontrollable excitement at a figure identical to those I see piled up there today. Back then, getting her that little treasure was much more than a commercial transaction; it was building her a haven of tenderness amidst the vicissitudes surrounding us in our country. Sofía is no longer here to ask me for more soft toys, but her memory lives on in every stitch of these plush creatures. She taught me that a child’s world knows nothing of economic crises or social imbalances; it knows only wonder.

I think @lanzjoseg invites us to do just that; this isn’t a photo for the market; it’s a kaleidoscope to keep us from losing our way. It reminds us that, no matter how far we’ve come or how structured our new lives may be, we all carry within us that little corner where a cat in a hat or a bear with round eyes is capable of stopping time. We are what we remember, and on that shelf, amongst pastel colours and silky textures, lies the innocence that allows us to remain human, despite the distances and the absences... despite cultural differences.
