Love is in the Air in Splinterlands

in Ladies of Hive4 months ago

Splinterlands finally decided to lean into the season of love on its next event in its own dramatic way. When I first read about their post, my first thought was, “Okay, this is definitely a Valentine’s event.” The name, "Amorendel," alone already sounds romantic and once you see the theme, "love, rivalry, jealousy, and obsession," everything just clicks instantly. The Amorendel event starts on February 1 with the new Ranked season and runs until February 15 which lines up perfectly with Valentine’s Day. It’s limited, seasonal and very on-brand for Splinterlands to turn something into both sweet and slightly unhinged. Honestly, I like how they kept doing these seasonal events and I also appreciate the art like it's done so very professional, with care, and with love.

What really stood out to me first is the Amorendel arena. It’s not just a small visual change. The colors are romantic, dramatic, and pink, so much pink. I think playing in a themed arena like this makes matches feel more special since event also runs at the same time. I like it when Splinterlands does this because it feels new. You can see their effort that they clearly wants their players to enjoy the upcoming event.

Amorendel, Splinterland's Valentine’s Event

This event clearly feels like Splinterlands’ version of Valentine’s Day. Everything about Amorendel is centered around emotions rather than competition. The Love, rivalry, and obsession themes are not something that you normally see pushed this hard in competitive games, and that’s what makes it very interesting. Splinterlands doesn’t really need to try and be cute at all but they still did their best which I like and appreciate.

Like I said, the timing also reinforces that idea. With the event running from February 1 to February 15 makes it feel intentional rather than random. It’s not just random event dropped at a random time. It fits perfectly for players to actually experience it while grinding Ranked, collecting rewards, and experimenting with the new modifier that will come with the Amorendel event.

New Arena: The Amorendel Battlefield

The Amorendel arena adds a lot to the atmosphere of the event. I can't stress enough how pink and girlish this arena is and I'm not complaining. If fact, I am liking the vibe. Every match played during the event feels different just because of how the battlefield looks. I feel like once this goes through, I would feel less stressed when playing the game just because of how vibrant the arena is.

I personally enjoy when Splinterlands adds themed arenas because it gives a more vibrant look to the battles. Even if the gameplay and battle is still the same, the change in the background helps keep things fresh. It’s a small detail but I think that it would matter more than people think.

New Modifier: Hey Jealousy

The biggest gameplay change during Amorendel is the "Hey Jealousy" modifier. This modifier forces all units to attack the enemy unit with the highest health. To make it less complicated, this is Equal Opportunity modifier but completely flipped. Instead of attacking the lowest health units, all units will be focusing on the tanks first.

This modifier breaks traditional positioning where tank is in the front. Your highest health unit becomes a target and a shield without even trying. I do have some questions like I wonder if it would behave similarly to the Opportunity ability. Would Taunt be able to redirect the attacks or not? I think Triage will be really strong in this modifier.

Amorendel Skins: Sweetheart vs Obsessive

Amorendel event also brings new skins for your units.

The Sweetheart versions of the Amorendel skins are the softer side of this event. They look romantic, playful and very Valentine-themed. This makes them easy to like at first glance. These skins are available in the Glint Shop for the whole duration of the event so as long as you’re active, you have a fair chance to get the ones you want. I like that they are not locked behind luck because it makes the event feel more welcoming instead of stressful.

The Obsessive versions are where things get darker and more intense. These skins lean heavily into the idea of obsession and some darker themed. They didn't show any skins yet except for this fox or wolf so we'll just have to hunt for the skins on our own. The Obsessive skins are only obtainable through Ultimate Loot Boxes and are extremely limited making them much harder to get. Since these are just based on chance, the more you play, the higher chance you have to get them.

Avatar Wardrobe Items

Lastly, we have some additions for the avatars.

Outside of battles, Amorendel also introduces Valentine-themed avatar wardrobe items. These are cosmetic only which is for your collection. I like how it looks and would probably get some on my own.

The designs are very different from each other which fits the overall theme well. It’s not something you need but it’s a fun extra for players who enjoy customizing their profiles and avatars and is also good if you enjoy collecting rarities in Splinterlands.

Below are the prices for the said avatar wardrobe items:

Last Notes

Overall, Amorendel feels like a good and balanced seasonal event instead of just a small update. I like the themed arena the most. The new modifier will also be interesting as well as the exclusive skins, and other cosmetic rewards. I like how they are all tied together by a clear Valentine’s concept. You don’t need to care about every part of it to enjoy the event but getting some of it would be nice.

Since I only play in Frontier Mode now, I am not getting any of those glint so for this season, I might start trying the Ranked mode. There are a lot of units and archon that I don't know so God help me when I start playing the Ranked battles.

I am not aiming to get a lot from this event but I do want to get that Kaylia Silverleaf skin and the Elegant Top wardrobe item. Good luck to every players out there and see you in the Ranked battles during this season event.
