Talking about sex seems to be like an abominable act, most especially in this part of the African country where I am. Sex education seems to be the greatest sin and I can vividly say that it is one of the greatest mistakes that our religious mindset is pushing us to make.
Mention anything about sex and you're tagged as a promiscuous person, no matter how educating what is coming out of your mouth may be. I know these feelings because I was once in the shoes of those who judge people based on the fact that they are talking about things related to sex. They are talking in the rubbish (lol) is my whole thoughts back then not until maturity sets in and if not for personal morals and upbringing, so many things could have gone wrong in the process of growing up.
Yes, it would have gone wrong because all my mum ever educated me on before and after my first menstrual period was not to allow a boy/guy/man touch me because the day they do, I'll get pregnant and she will skin me alive(you know all these motherly and African mothers threat to instill fear in a child).
I could say the fear of my mum and my decision to be a graduate, wear NYSC khaki and work in a company helped in shaping me to become whatever I am today and not the wrong education of the TOUCH. Many of my peers who dwelt on that and found it to be false actually have their children in JSS by now (though they will start eating the fruits of their labour on time sha lol).
Educating a child rightly on sex, how it starts, what and what it leads to as consequences is not too bad to give a child, both boy and girl and not the girl child alone.
Right from that moment they start knowing the right hand from left, let them know the places on their body that they should never allow an outsider touch either a man or woman except for you the parent who baths them.
Before puberty or as a teenager, let them start knowing things they shouldn't do from you as a parent rather than getting the information the wrong way from a wrong external body of life destroyers.
I watched a village movie clip recently of a girl gisting her mum about how she visited her boyfriend and she remembered how her mum had warned her severally never to allow a guy touch her pant. She said she warned the guy same way and then the guy said she can pull off the pant herself so that he doesn't touch it and then they had sex. The mum was busy screaming while the girl was busy expressing her happiness at what she just did with her boyfriend.
All these kind of scraped information will only put our children in more harms way for them now or in future.
Sex education is not a crime, offense or an abomination. Infact create conversations and line of communication in such a way that these children feels free to discuss anything whatsoever with you.
It may not be an easy task based on how we were raised but thinking about how fast and speedy this era is and the rapid growth of these children, equipping them on time and in the right manner and approach remains the best solution.
