Right before Covid 19, I went on one of my spontaneous trips to the Eastern Region. I remember it like yesterday. It was raining heavily that night and everywhere was so cold. I wanted to surprise a friend on her birthday which was the following day because she was going through a lot. Aftee not thinking about the risk involved, I just picked up my trip bag and left.
I was so excited on my way to the station that I forgot to wear a jacket. During that time, I had also just changed my phone which meant I had to change the charger in my trip bag, but I forgot that as well. After getting on the bus, I informed everyone close to me of where I was going, and they just understood me.
Halfway through the journey, my phone's battery went low and that was how I found out I didn’t pick the right charger. I started being worried because I was yet to even book my Airbnb. The person beside me realized how worried I was and then asked me if everything was okay and on a normal day, I would have said yes but realizing how much trouble I was going through, I told him everything. He started by giving me a charging cord to charge my phone.
And after I began shivering, he removed his jacket and covered me with it. (I saw it later when I woke up from my sleep). When we reached where we were going, it was too late and all the Airbnbs were booked. He told me not to worry about accommodation and offered me a place to stay. I immediately declined, not knowing the kind of person he was.
Right after declining, he looked around and asked me to come with him to one nearby police station. I didn’t know why but looking at the time, I just followed him there. When we got there, he removed his national identification card, passport and work id to show me and the police. I immediately realized he was trying to show me that he was harmless. He even made me take a picture of him together with his id and forward it to my relatives.
I then agreed to stay the night at his house and then look for an Airbnb the following day. He lived in a 5 bedroom house and was just going home to pick up something he forgot for his trip outside the country. I asked if that meant he wasn’t going to be available and he said yes, but he assured me that he lived in a gated estate so I had nothing to worry about.
I spent the night in his house and then left the following day. I even forgot to take his number and he didn’t ask for mine either. Up till today, I thank God for letting me meet such a person especially that day and at that time. It’s definitely the type of kindness I would never forget even if I experienced memory loss. And I pray wherever he is, he's successful in all his endeavors.
