Right after reading the second prompt, I already knew what I was going to choose. So I began by thinking about all my cousins and imagined them having their wedding, which got me really excited until I reached that one, which got me to roll my eyes. Anyway, that doesn’t change anything, though.
Let me begin by saying I grew up around my cousins, so they are almost like my siblings, and I love them so much. I remember how we used to wait for my aunt and uncle to sleep, and then we would all gather in the living room, build a fort with our duvets and the sofas, and sleep until the piercing scolding of my aunt woke us up. Oh wow, those days were something else.
Although those were vacation days, each day looked like a huge family event because all my cousins were present, and some aunties and uncles would pass by as and when they could to check up on us. And so I know how it feels to have all your extended family members around you. And thankfully, I’ve experienced it not once, not twice, but about a hundred and one times and would definitely keep on experiencing it at least once every year at our annual family gatherings.
To my best friend’s anniversary, this isn’t even hard for me to say no to because I don’t have a best friend. I believe I probably would have already attended her wedding years back, so for her anniversary, I would just send her flowers or a card to congratulate her and later hang out with her. And then explain to her why I couldn’t make it. I also think since it’s just an anniversary, there’ll be many more anniversaries of hers for me to attend.
With all the explanations I’ve given above, it’s very obvious that I’m going to choose my cousin’s wedding. As I said, my cousins are like my siblings, and if not for anything else, a wedding is a big day. Ughhhhh! I can imagine Nana Efua (a cousin of mine) getting married. I’m definitely not missing that for anything. That’s something that would happen once in a lifetime. And I would put everything aside to celebrate with her as the maid of honor that I’m going to be—something we’ve planned since childhood.
Anniversaries happen every now and then. Family events? Same. But my cousin tying the knot with the love of her life? There's a reason why it's called the big day, and I'm not missing it for anything!
